Serial killers, psychopaths, sociopaths, and criminals identifying the essences of psychopathy. Chapter 23 Edmund Kepners (Co-Ed Killer)- murdered 10 people between 1964 and 1973 in California. He also mutilated and dismembered his victims as well as being a sexual sadist and necrophiliac. Ted Bundy (All American Serial Killer)- Estimated to have killed over 100 people between 1961 and 1978 in several states. He eventually confessed to killing 30 and was executed in Florida in 1989. John Gracy- Murdered people in the U.S from 1972 and 1978. A sucessful buisness man who often entertained children as “pogo the clown” was convicted of raping and killing 33 boys and men over 7 years in Illinois and burying bodies under his house and garage. Richard Ramirez ( night Stalker)-A satan worshiping serial killer who described himself as “pure evil”. He was convicted of 13 murders in California between 1984 and 1985 as well as 30 other felonies. Jeffery Dahmer ( Milwaukee Cannibal)- Raped,murdered, dismembered and ate 17 boys and men between 1978 and 1991. Robert Pickton- Operating between 1983 and 2002 in B.C. Canada. He was convicted of killing 6 women and charged with the deaths of 20 others. During his trial the crown reported that Pickton confessed to an undercover police officer to killing 49 women and wanted to kill one more to make it an even 50. ● Serial killing is not synonymous with psychopathy. ● While some real life serial killers are unambiguously psychopathic (Ted Bundy) other haves serious mental or neurological issues that underlie their behavior (Jeffery Dahmer) Early conceptualization of psychopathy. Morally insane-madness consisting in a morbid perversion of the natural feelings, affections, inclinations, temper, habits, moral dispositions, and natural impulses without any remarkable disorder or defect of the interest or knowing reasoning faculties and particularly without any insane illusions or hallucinations.

Psychopathy checklist-revised. PCL-R has a 3-point scale based on the degree to which the criteria for a given personality trait or behaviour is met.One who score 30 or above on PCL-R can reliably be categorized as a psycho path. Factor 1. Interpersonal/emotional Factor 2. Behavioural Factor 3.Independent Factors Sociopathy and Antisocial personality disorder. Sociopath-A sociopath is a term used to describe someone who has antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). People with ASPD can't understand others' feelings. They'll often break rules or make impulsive decisions without feeling guilty for the harm they cause Antisocial personality disorder-Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD or APD) is a personality disorder characterized by a long-term pattern of disregard for, or violation of, the rights of others. A low moral sense or conscience is often apparent, as well as a history of crime, legal problems, or impulsive and aggressive behavior. ● The diagnostic criteria for ASPD in DSM-5 are as follows. 1. A pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of other occuring age 15 years.as indicated by 3 or more of the following. A.Failure to conform with social norms. B.Deceitful. C.Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead. D.Irritability and aggressiveness. E.Reckless disregard for safety of self or others. F.Irresponsibility. G.Lack of remorse. 2. At least 18 years of age 3. There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15. 4. The occurrence of antisocial behaviour is not exclusively during the course of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Psychopathy is somewhat distinct from ASPD. ● The main difference is that the former emphasizes the personality traits and affective deficits as the core features whereas ASPD tends to emphasize the antisocial behaviour that is often a consequence of this condition. Prevalence and Gender differences ● The rate of both psychopathy and ASPD is 3 times higher in men compared to women. Relationship with criminality. ● Psychopathy and ASPD are most commonly found in the prison population with about 50% of male prisoners and 25% female prisoners meeting the criteria for ASPD with rates of psychopathy being in the range of 10% for male prisoners and 2% for female prisoners. ● The large majority of serial killers do not meet the criteria for psychopathy....
