1. What did Laura Bohannan learn about Tiv culture from her attempt to tell them the story of Hamlet? I feel she learned, or at least what I learned from reading this, was that the elders of this tribe know only what their culture is, and what it means to them. So even in learning about other cultures, they can only view it through the lens of what they understand and it’s otherwise inconceivable to imagine that there are other truths out there. You also learn that what the elders say, goes as they are so confident in telling her to “let her country's elders know” that she hasn’t just been “sitting around in the bush.” 2. What prevented Bohannan and her friends from understanding each other? Kind of relating to what I said previously - the fact that the elders can only understand things through their cultural lens. Bohannan had to depict the story in a way that they could understand, as much as she didn’t want to because she felt she knew the “true” meaning of the story and went into it thinking they would come to the same conclusion of Hamlet that she did....
