Short Essay on the Tabernacle

The function of symbolism in Tabernacle were used through various sacred objects and furniture in several instances. Those instances within the Tabernacle through the pieces of furniture were able to represent Jesus Christ through his plan to give sinners an opportunity to redeem their sins. The furnishings were also sometimes bronze, or gold and color can bring some significance when interpreting the purpose of this. The bronze color was the color of the altar and the altar was used as a place for sacrificing something in different forms, mostly through an animal or blood of some sort. This was then used as a place to be able to free themselves from the sin in their lives. Through this, the bronze was a representation of sin and how God’s judgment was against sin. The bronze laver was used by the priests prior to serving in the Tabernacle, to show that anybody who approached God was spiritually and physically clean. The golden lampstand, the altar of incense and the table of showbread were all made or overlaid with gold. Gold symbolizes divinity. The light on the golden lampstand was to burn endlessly but the incense in the Altar of Incense was to be burned every morning and evening. The bread that is placed in the table of showbread is supposed to represent God's presence, “and you shall set the bread of presence on the table before me at all times” (Ex 25:30). The Altar of burnt offerings was located in a central location where nobody could miss. It reminded the people that an offering or a sacrifice was required to access God. This altar was also the largest altar in the Tabernacle and held carcasses of dead animals after they were burnt as offerings. The remaining ashes were collected on a grate underneath, which was removed periodically by priests and was considered sacred.

When it comes to the organization of the Tabernacle, God had the priests and the Levites camped closest to the Tabernacle, and around them were the twelve tribes. The presence of the Lord was clear throughout the Tabernacle as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night. Out of the twelve tribes, four of them were considered the leading tribes, Judah, Ruben, Ephraim, and Dan. They were positioned in the shape of a cross around the tabernacle. The most important side, which is the front of the Tabernacle is the front of it, which was also the East side. Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun encamped together in front of the Tabernacle which were the positions of honor. To the west was Ephraim as the leader along with Manasseh and Benjamin. The division that led the North was Dan, and with him Asher and Naftali. Last but not least, in the South Reuben along with Simeon and Gad were encamped. It wasn’t just the placement that mattered but this was the order that the tribes marched in, leading with Judah’s tribe.
