Intrapartal Care Theories of Labor SIGNS OF LABOR

1. Lightening – Precipitation of the fetal presenting part into the true pelvis. - Develops 10 – 14 days prior to labor. - Alleviation from diaphragmatic pressure and shortness of breath. - Increase frequency of voiding - Increase varicosities - Increase shooting pain down the legs due to pressure on sciatic nerve. 2. Braxton Hicks Contractions – Benign, occasional, shifting painless contractions that decreases or deminish with activity. 3. Increased energy level – Expectant mothers focus their energy in preparation by cleaning, cooking, preparing the nursery, this usually occurs 24-48 hours before labor. 4. GI upset - women frequently experience diarrhea, indigestion or nausea & vomiting few days before labor 5. Weight loss – The mother losses about 2 -3 lbs., in 3 – 4 days before labor process starts 6. GOODELL’S SIGN –Is termed as the softening of the cervix.

SIGNS OF FALSE LABOR 1. Contractions are irregular. 2. Contractions eases with walking, resting or with changes in position 3. Usually the pain is only felt abdominally. 4. The mother is relaxed and is able to respond to commands.

SIGNS OF TRUE LABOR 1. Bloody show The mucus plug in the cervical canal is expelled thus resulting to softening of the cervix and increased pressure of the presenting part. The exposed cervical capillaries release a small amount of blood that mix with the mucus, resulting in bloody show. 2. Spontaneous rupture of membrane Two in ten women experience SROM (Spontaneous rupture of membrane) prior the onset of labor. This lessen the bulk of the uterus, thickens the uterine wall, and increases uterine irritability. Labor usually commence.

3. Uterine Contractions Progressive uterine contraction is a clear sign that labor has begun. Contractions become regular, spontaneous and come without warning....
