Six Essential Elements Guided Notes

Name:

1-Geography is the study of People, places, and the Environment. “Geography is a science that deals with the description, distribution, and interaction of the diverse physical, biological, and cultural features of the Earth’s surface.” 2-Geography has SIX Essential Elements. 1st Essential Element: The World in Spatial Terms 3- Maps and other geographic tools get Information from a Spatial perspective. Define “spatial”: relating to or occupying space.

4-Uses Mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environment spatially. 5-Analysis of this information. Define “analysis”: detailed examination of the elements or structure of something. How would this be useful? We can determine what will happen when certain elements come in contact with one another by having a solid analysis of them. h 2nd Essential Element: Places and Regions 6-Physical and Human Characteristics of place. 7-People create regions based on Earth’s complexity. Define “regions”: an area or division, especially part of a country or the world having definable characteristics but not always fixed boundaries. 8-How culture and experience influence people’s perceptions of places and regions. What is an example of this? Miami, FL is considered by Florida residents to be very different from Pensacola, FL although both are coastal cities in Florida. h h 3rd Essential Element: Physical Systems 9-The physical processes that shape the pattern of the Earth’s surface. What would be an example of such a process? Why is that an example?

Wind is a physical process that shape the pattern of the earth’s surface. It can shape the earth’s surface because it is a force that moves thing in our environment such as sand, dirt, leaves etc. 10-The characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems. Define “ecosystems”: a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. Could ecosystems change? Why or why not? Natural Changes That Can Affect an Ecosystem. Wind, rain, predation and earthquakes are all examples of natural processes which impact an ecosystem. h 4th Essential Element: Human Systems 11-Characteristics, distribution, and migration of human population. Define “migration”: migration is the movement of people from one place to another with the intentions of settling, permanently or temporarily at a new location. Why might people migrate? h To have access to better supplies, or live in a better environment. h 12-Characteristics, distribution, and complexity of Earth’s cultural mosaics. Define “cultural mosaic”: h is the mix of ethnic groups, languages, and cultures that coexist within society.

13- Patterns of economic interdependence. What is “interdependence”? the dependence of two or more people or things on each other. How are people economically interdependent? The participants in any economic system must belong to a trading network to obtain the products they cannot produce efficiently for themselves. h 14-Processes, patterns, and functions of human settlement.

15-Role of cooperation and conflict on Earth’s surface. What is an example of cooperation on the Earth’s surface? h How is that an example? From the local and regional perspective, the collection and distribution for the regional water supply of central Texas is the responsibility of the Lower Colorado River Authority. The LCRA ensures the safe delivery of drinking water and carefully plans for the supply will not run dry . h

Give an example of conflict on the Earth’s surface and explain why it is an example: Most of the OPEC countries are Islamic and since the attacks on the US in 2001, oil production, control, and price are all source of conflicts between OPEC nations and US interests The state of Israel established in Palestine at the end of WW II, is an area in conflict with its Arab neighbor The dislocation of the Palestinians has been the source of conflict between nations h h 5th Essential Element: Environment and Society 16-Humans change the physical environment. How? One way humans change the physical environment is by strip mining (also called “surface mining”) and open pit mining remove large sections of land from an area. Old, retired open pit mines can fill with water, creating artificial lakes.

17- Physical science affect human systems. Can you think of an example of this? Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Hurricanes, Tornados. h 18-Changes occur in the meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources. Define “resources”: h a stock or supply of money, materials, staff, and other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization in order to function effectively. Why would changes occur? We exceed the limit of our resources. h

6th Essential Element: Uses of Geography 19- To interpret the past. 20- To interpret the present and plan for the future. Offer an example of geography being used for one of these purposes: Volcanoes are being studied to determine future possible eruption dates....
