Guided Notes 1A List and define the 10 fallacies: 1. Appeal to Popularity is making an argument that something is the right or correct thing to do because a lot of people agree with doing it. 2. False Cause is when someone presumes that a real or perceived relationship between things means that one is the cause of the other. 3. Appeal to Ignorance is an argument for a conclusion based on a lack of evidence. 4. Hasty Generalization is a fallacy in which a conclusion is not logically justified by sufficient or unbiased evidence. 5. Limited Choice is forcing a conclusion by artificially limiting the available options. Most commonly it involves an “either/or” statement. 6. Appeal to Emotion use emotion in place of reason in order to attempt to win the argument. It is a type of manipulation used in place of valid logic. 7. Personal Attack challenges one's opponent personally, rather than his or her arguments. 8. Circular Reasoning is when you attempt to make an argument by beginning with an assumption that what you are trying to prove is already true. 9. Red Herring is a kind of fallacy that is an irrelevant topic introduced in an argument to divert the attention of listeners or readers from the original issue. 10. Straw Man is substituting a person's actual position or argument with a distorted, exaggerated, or misrepresented version of the position of the argument....
