Description

1. Skylon Tower is a famous land in Canada which acts as an observation tower, tourist attraction, and as well as an eatery tower. It stands at the height of 775 feet above the base of the falls which offers a offers stunning viewing point for the American, Horse Falls and also the Niagara Falls. It was designed by an architectural design firm from Toronto known as Gregman and Haman. 2. Its construction commenced in 1964 and was officially opened by the then the New York governor and Ontario Premier, Nelson Rockefeller and John Robarts respectively. The Tylon Tower cost the Canadian government more than $7 million for constructing the tower. The tower plays a significant role in hosting of celebrities, royalties, and heads of state dignitaries. 3. The main contractor was Pigott Construction Co, and the structural engineers were Farkas, Barron, and Jablonsky and Otis Elevator Company as the main Elevator of the tower. The Hershey Company shareholdings financed it. 4. The tower contains two restaurants that are used for Niagara Falls dining, The Summit Suite Buffet and The Revolving Dining room. The tower comprises of various services that any member may require. The Revolving Dining room silently rotates 360 degrees every hour. Besides, it has six floors with three elevators. 5. The base of the tower contains a variety of centers which offers a range of things and services to do in one location like the shopping center, 3D/4D movie theatre, and also a family fun arcade, complete with a food court. 6. The impressive height of the tower presents it with a unique challenge, where its height and nearness to the international border forced the contractors to first consult the air transport authorities of both Canada and America before commencing the work. The experts from the University of designed the tower that can be able to withstand winds of up to 110 miles per hour. 7. The constructors of the tower borrowed the slip form technique to build the tower which has been successfully applied in the construction of the Seagram Tower. The concrete was poured for 38 days to the moving form. This resulted in a unique shape of the tower with a tapered shape. 8. Its dome was constructed for eight despite the challenges the builders encountered while raising it. After the construction of the base, it was then built 380 feet high using hydraulic jacks together with jacking rods. 9. The tower was officially named Skylon by the company president in 1964 coining the name from its appearance of " space aged version of a skyscraper". 10. In May 1965 the tower experienced a major fire outbreak that believed to have destroyed property worth $5000 but was later successfully contained at a 6000-foot area.

11. After its official opening of the Skylon Tower in September 1965, the Canadian Pacific Hotels got contracts for opening dining locations within the tower. They later purchased the tower for 11 million dollars. 12. In August 1974, the Skylon Tower declared the first annual Skylon Marathon for hosting Buffalo, New York, and Ontario as the participants in the marathon publicly. 13. In June 1985, two unknown men parachuted from the top of the observation deck of the tower down the tower. 14. In 1986, the Skylon Tower Complex was purchased by two Niagara Falls businessmen. In June same year, David Hicks successfully parachuted from the tower, making him the third person to successfully parachute then followed the other two. 15. The outdoor deck of the tower is fenced by glass hence offers a 360 degrees views. Also, the indoor Observation Deck offers 360 degrees views, which is enclosed by glass which have a thickness of 3/8 inch. From the Observation Desk of the tower one can view up to a distance of 80 miles which is equivalent to 129kilometres, and it makes one complete rotation for every hour, thus making it clear when viewing. 16. The Skylon Tower being a signature building, it makes the Niagara Falls skyline unique. It also features as yellow bug elevators which run all year round making the topmost part of the tower to look fantastic for observation and viewing. 17. The tower contains three elevators that take a person from the base to the top point of the building in approximately 52 seconds. It also has 662 steps from the lower exhibition floor to the observation point. 18. The weight of the concrete used in the construction of the tower is 48000000 Ibs (21,987,520kgs). 19. The Buffet Dining room provides the ultimate cheap casual dining. It contains a double-sided buffet and warm atmosphere full of welcoming accent. It offers both lunch and dinner sessions and early dinners between 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm. 20. The Skylon Tower offers free riding from the base to the top only for those who are dining but charge those who are not dining. Summit Suite Buffet provides a perfect venue for private receptions during the winter seasons....
