Description

Semester Project – Company Analysis The semester long project is conducted in teams of between five and seven students. Each student team is assigned an industry and list of firms that are representative of that industry. Each student in the team must choose one of the companies on the industry list on which he or she will undertake research. The team analysis will be delivered in two (2) parts: Team and Company Introduction and Corporate Social Responsibility analysis.     

Each presentation will be evaluated as to its delivery, content and use of media. Each presentation is time constrained. See presentation assignments below for specific time limits. Each presentation will supported by a MS PowerPoint presentation. At the conclusion of the presentation, the team will “stand” for questions. The class, the TA, and the instructor will do questioning. “Q&A” will count towards both delivery and content. Each presentation must be accompanied by the following documentation. o A summary of not more than two double-spaced pages. The summary must include a discussion of the most important element of the presentation. o Attached to the summary must be copies of the presentation slides (printed three slides per page). Each member of the class is to evaluate each presentation. The evaluation is on two dimensions - the quality of the delivery and the extent of learning. These evaluations will be reviewed by the instructor and may be considered in assigning grades.

Grade and Individual Responsibility Overall the project counts as 20% of the course grade. During the course of the semester, team members will have an opportunity to both deliver and receive constructive feedback. This will be undertaken electronically using the Team Learning Assistant website. Students will find documentation on the Team Learning Assistant registration and assignments under RESOURCES on the SM 131 A1 class tab. At the end of the semester, each student will evaluate each team member’s performance on the project. Individual student grades may be adjusted based on those evaluations. Details of the two presentations are below. Presentation 1: Team and Company Introduction – 5% Teams will deliver a 15-minute presentation introducing the students on the team, the team's industry and the companies the students are following. The overall purpose of the presentation is to make the class aware of the team's industry and companies. Special emphasis should be placed on: The firm’s name and describing in general terms the types of business the companies are in The location of the firm’s headquarters and where they operate The primary products/services of the firm, Where those products and services can be purchased and/or used, Where we might see or use their main brand (product or service). Who their main competitors are

Semester Project – Company Analysis And how the firms have fared financially over the past 3-5 years. There must also be at least one slide that introduces the team and its members. For this component, creativity is key. Try to find something that connects you but makes you all individuals that adds strength to the team. Although each student is to research a company, each TEAM will coordinate the delivery of each team members’ company. This presentation must be no longer than 15 minutes per team, and each Team must be prepared to stand for Q&A for 5 minutes for a total time of 20 minutes.   

All slides and presentation materials are due on QuestromTools by 11 pm on Oct 14th . Presentations will take place in class on Tuesday Oct 16th and Thursday Oct 18th. Please bring two (2) hardcopies of your team’s slides (printed in the Notes format with three slides per page), presentation summary and notes to class the first day of presentations.

Presentation 2: Corporate Social Responsibility-15% This presentation will be in six parts reflecting the ethics, CSR, decision-making and different business functions. The mission of your presentation is to fully explore the implications of the functional decisions by your company’s management, the impact of those decisions on stakeholders, and whether those choices reflect decision-making consistent with the company’s stated mission and values. For example, what are the impacts of the strategic decision by WalMart to enter the local, small grocer market on stakeholders? To answer this, first you must identify the stakeholders. Part six of your project is to find an ethical issue the company faced, or is currently facing, that relates to one or more functional areas. This issue could be a result of unfortunate decision-making, or it could be because your company is a leader in responsible decision-making. In this last part, you are to state your opinion about whether, as a whole, after looking at the business functions and CSR and ethical issues, your company is living its mission/value statement or credo. Your final presentation should reflect both your analysis of the functional areas and the ethical issue(s) that you looked at. The presentation should be a seamless story that goes beyond merely answering the questions and reflects the team’s analytical thinking to put these pieces together in a manner that provides your audience with a full picture. 6 Components of Presentation 2: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Business Structure, mission, vision and values to include CSR/CSV Financial Performance Marketing Mix and Brand Equity Operations Management Overall Strategy Ethics

Each of these components include a lengthy list of questions and checkpoints throughout the semester to provide assistance in completion of the project. They are intended to assist in

Semester Project – Company Analysis preparation for the final presentation of this project which must include the information from all of the components. It is not expected that every question in the components will be included in the final presentation but rather they are data to be gathered to assist in the team’s analysis of the company’s successes and/or failures. It is the team’s responsibility to work with their TA to schedule an appointment to ensure completion of each component. GRADING: Your team grade for BOTH presentations will be based on the following (note that the grade will reflect the presentation materials): 1. Content: (40%) Have you addressed each component completely? Did you apply the course material correctly? Is your analysis clear and in a logical order? Do you have a conclusion? Does your conclusion summarize your main issues? 2. Delivery: (40%) How well did you incorporate the substance as well as the multi-media components of your presentation? Were you prepared? Did you know your part of the presentation? Did you speak clearly and confidently? Did you make eye contact with the audience? Did you allocate your time effectively? -Delivery also includes team-work: Are team members able to transition seamlessly? Are non-presenting team members attentive to the speaker? Do slides change as the speaker covers points? Did every team member play a significant role? Are Q&A balanced across team members? Do all team members have a mastery of all content? 3. Slides and/or media: (20%) The presentation does not have to be a multi-media masterpiece worthy of the Cannes Film Festival, but it must use media effectively to make your points and provide clarity and add value to your presentation. Are your slides too crowded with text? Do your slides or media help the audience or distract them? ALL SLIDES MUST BE IN MICROSOFT POWERPOINT...
