CULTS AND NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS

OUTLINE

Topic: Cults and New Religious Movements I.

INTRODUCTION: In western society, there are plenty of examples of cult and new religious movements (NRMs) members turning towards extreme acts of violence in order to spread their message. Some examples of these extreme acts of violence include the Manson Family murders as well as the Jonestown massacre. This leads us, as a society, to believe that all cults and NRMs operate in this fashion. This is simply not true, however, this does not mean that these groups are not negatively impacting theirs members and other members of society. THESIS STATEMENT: Although not all cults and NRMs are as extreme as society believes them to be, they still have a large negative impact on their followers. PREVIEW: Cults and New religious movements are highly negative on the mental, emotional and physical health of their followers and society.
