1. What is convict leasing? Answer: Convict leasing is slavery replacement system which was described as worst in slavery. What typically would happen is that, when some land owner or somebody needed worker to do certain amount of work, they ask for convict leasing to the community and they would pay a certain amount of money for their labor to the State.

2. How and why was African American daily life criminalized? Answer: To supply the land owner for the convict labor African American people was criminalized for simple causes. Law enforcement of government was too harsh with the black people than the whites. Even 9-12 years old African American kids were also being criminalized just to fulfill the need for the land owner.

3. How did the convict leasing program create and reinforce stereotypes of African American criminality? Answer: Convict leasing program created and reinforced the stereotypes of African American criminality because authority arrested more black people than whites without any major crimes and judges too sentenced far more harsh charges against the black people. As a result, African American criminals get more punishment than the whites for a similar crime and African American people were sent to the convict leasing program straight way.

4. What are the long term effects of convict leasing? For convicts? For their

families? Their descendants? Answer: The convicts of convict leasing had to clear snakes, digging gas mines, making railroads in high temperature and they had to work 14 hours a day for every 6-7 days a week. Sometimes, convicts were kept in the cages which usually used for circus animals. They had to take the worst food, didn’t get any treatment or medicine. They used to die in explosions, drowned in the rivers or tortured to death. They didn’t have the long term economic value to their family or descendants or to the society so that they were treated in such a negligible way....
