PROJECT 9 … Soc. 102 – Jim Crow Doc.

Assignment Instructions: Read the article – Who was Jim Crow? Then view the documentary“The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow” – Part 4 on YouTube The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow | PBS | ep 4 of 4 Terror and Triumph Then answer the following questions: 1. Define – in your own words - Jim Crow Laws? … Provide an example. Jim Crow laws are the laws used for segregation. They restricted African Americans and denied their freedom for almost 100 years. For example; blacks were followed by lynch mobs and weren’t allowed to use the same water fountain or bathrooms and whites. 2. What was the major world event that laid the groundwork for the tearing down of JimCrow laws in the U.S.? Explain why the event was so forceful? The bombing of Pearl Harbor laid out the groundwork for tearing down the Jim crow laws. America had to defend themselves and get involved in WWII, this allowed black men to aid America and go help fight for our country. People did not care what color your skin was but only if you were willing to fight and defend your country. Everyone was welcoming towards the African Americans and this opened Americas eyes. 3. Name three social institutions that African Americans used to bring down the Jim Crow Laws. These institutions are stated in the documentary. One institution was the MLB. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and was the first African American to be a professional athlete. After Jackie, black actors began becoming more and more popular, and finally schools became desegregated and all children learned in one place with the same education. Blacks were beginning to be seen as one and even though it wasn’t a quick change, the change was slowly happening. 4. What is gradualism and why was it so harmful to the Civil Rights Movement? Gradualism is changing over time or just by nature. The whites did not want to force the change but instead to just let it happen as it happened. But the African Americans were treated poorly so they wanted change as quick as possible. This caused tensions to rise between blacks and whites so it harmed the civil rights movement just because the change was delayed and not actually fully enforced.
