SOWK 335: Social Policy Social Work Bill Assignment & Professional Writing Rationale and/or Description: In the study of the systems and practice of social policy, social worker must be aware of the way legislative policy is shaped and influences human wellbeing. This assignment gives students a 360-degree perspective of a current bill in the legislative session and its relationship to social systems. Purpose: This assignment is designed to have you begin building pre-competency in the following areas:  engage in practices that advance social and economic justice (EP2.1.5.c)  collaborate with colleagues and clients for effective policy action (EP2.1.8.b) Process: For this assignment, you and your partner will do the following: 1. Select a state bill addressed during this session of the Virginia General Assembly (Spring semester), or a federal bill addressed in the House of Representatives or the Senate (Fall semester), that is related to a social work/social justice issue. Provide the bill number, patron, co-patrons and a brief summary and history of the bill to include who are for it, against it, their actions and the why's of the actions. 2. Provide a brief summary of the bill and it’s connection to social welfare policy. 3. Provide your local legislators stand on the bill and discuss. 4. How is this issue related to basic human rights? 5. What is your stand on the bill and why. How does the bill address discrimination – racism, sexism, homosexism, classism, ageism, etc.…or does it?….or should it? 6. Discuss the intended and possible unintended consequences of the proposed legislation. What are the VIBES evidenced in the bill? 7. If you could re-write the bill, realistically, how would you do it? Why? 8. Who are interest groups who are or should be supporting the legislation? Name and discuss at least 2. 9. Who are interest groups who are or might be opposed to the legislation? Name and discuss at least 2. 10. What is the stance of the National Association of Social Workers? 11. Talk to/communicate with at least one person/ group regarding the legislation that is not a legislator or legislative assistant. Who did you talk to and what was the result? 12. What actions could one take to further your cause/bill? 13. Write a Letter to the Editor or letter to your elected official to advocate for or against your bill. Include a copy of the letter and evidence that you sent it. Product: You and your partner will attend a minimum of one conference with the professor regarding this project. Please provide a copy of your initial task matrix at that meeting. You and your partner will submit one final paper addressing the above requirements. Paper and references should include a Table of Contents and be in APA format. You will submit both the initial and final task

matrix that details which partner completed each of the sections. You will receive a group grade that is modified based on the task matrix....
