The Different Effects Breastfeeding has on Mothers

The Different Effects Breastfeeding has on Mothers Specific Purpose: During today’s class, I am going to inform my peers on how breastfeeding affects mothers through psychological, physical and social interaction components Main Ideas: 1. One of the biggest aspects is how mothers who breastfeed their newborns are more likely to have their anxiety, negative moods and stress reduced. 2. Breastfeeding affects mothers physically. 3. Breastfeeding impacts mothers’ responses to emotions in others and may thereby improve social interactions and relationships with their newborn.

Introduction: (Grabber)-It is important to be educated on something that happens every day in our lives, women are constantly breastfeeding, although it may not relate to your own lives it can relate to somebody you know relatives or friends and after this my hopes are you will gain some knowledge and pass it along don’t only let this information stay in this classroom. Raise your hands if you have ever been around someone who is breastfeeding and had many questions about it? (Preview) Today, I am going to discuss the effects breastfeeding has on mothers through psychological, physical and social interaction components. Let’s start with what breastfeeding is, it’s the action of feeding a baby with milk from the breast this gives the newborn nutrients and is sufficient for optimal growth in infants it’s known to give good benefits to the mother and the child the more you do it. Some mothers do it until they no longer can. (Transition/Thesis) By the end of the speech, we will understand how breastfeeding will continue to affect mothers but looking closely at those three components I named previously

psychological, physical and social interactions. Main point 1: One of the biggest aspects is how mothers who breastfeed their newborns are more likely to have their anxiety, negative moods and stress reduced. 1a) Based on the scholarly article Psychological effects of breastfeeding on children and mothers women who breastfeed reported significantly more hours of sleep, physical health, more energy and lower rates of depression than mixed or formulafeeding mothers. 1b) This happens when hormones from breastfeeding release and this helps mothers avoid any anger or negative moods as well as helps them sleep better and reduce their stress this leads to the mother feeling less depressed. 2a) Although it is common for depression to occur after birth when the mother is breastfeeding that is a helpful way to manage the depression. (Transition): While the psychological effects of breastfeeding on mothers are well established, there are also physical health benefits of breastfeeding. Main Point 2: Breastfeeding affects mothers physically. 1a) Mothers who breastfeed in many instances have helped them burn the extra calories they have from post-partum that helps them lose pregnancy weight. For instance in an NBCNews.com article, the University of Oxford researcher, Dr. Kirsty Bobrow, explains the body burns up to 500 calories per day producing breast milk. 1b) According to HealthyChildren.org this happens when the hormones release oxytocin which helps reduce postpartum bleeding and uterine involution when the uterus changes from pregnant to the non-pregnant state for a quicker recovery 2a) Women who breastfeed have a stronger cardiac vagal tone modulation, reduced

blood pressure, and reduced heart rate reactivity than mothers who formula feed their newborn and this is indexing a calm and non-anxious physiological state for women. (Transition) Mothers would feel confident and have higher self-esteem throughout the beginning of their pregnancies but what matters the most is the connection they will gain with their newborn. Main point 3: Breastfeeding impacts mothers’ responses to emotions in others and may thereby improve social interactions and relationships with their newborn. 1a) Breastfeeding can create and attachment between mother and child. The reason being is because mothers who breastfeed tend to be with their newborn more and touch them, make eye contact, talk to them and this all occurs during the act of breastfeeding, their infant is more responsive to their mother and vice versa. 1b) According to AM a science editor helps create a reciprocal relationship between the mother and child that is reinforced by a hormonal reward system. This is a good way to form a relationship with your newborn if for any reason the mother is having difficulties doing so. 2a) Apart from the parent and child attachment what is interesting is that the connection can help not only the mother but the child reduce sleep problems as well which also links to the physiological component because they feel better functioning emotionally and behaviorally.

Conclusion: Today we discussed the different ways in which breastfeeding affects mothers. We have learned how breastfeeding affects mothers psychologically and how they are less likely to become depressed and simply feel better mentally. We also addressed the physical aspect of

breastfeeding and how that affects their bodies in their everyday life. Lastly, the social interaction component which builds the bond between a mother and child. Breastfeeding ng is a highly effective way to improve your health, build a relationship with your newborn.
