Description

Outline for speech #1: The Girl with the Buffalo Skull Tattoo General purpose: To inform. Specific purpose: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to identify the significance of the buffalo skull tattoo on my inner left ankle. Central idea My buffalo skull tattoo has several different significant meanings to me. Introduction It’s estimated that 20% of adults aged 18 and up have at least one tattoo. Approximately 14% have two or more tattoos. I fit in with that narrow 14% of people with two or more. That’s what I decided to talk about to try and introduce myself a little bit more. All 3 of my tattoos hold some sort of significance to me, but there’s one that holds a greater significance than my other two, and it’s the one I chose to talk about today and why it’s so special to me. Sign post: Buffalo skulls symbolize many different things, but I wanted to talk about the way they represent me as a person. Body: I.

The first part of the symbolization is that bison skulls symbolize is strength, stability and prosperity. A. Goes to show that buffalo skulls are not just symbols of death and mortality. B. So when I see this tattoo, it serves as a constant reminder than I am stronger than I think, I am stable and if I work hard I will be successful.

(Signpost: Those are just the meanings that buffalo skulls symbolize that relate to my life. Skulls, however, hold an even greater significance than most would think when they look at me.) II.

When I’m not a full time college student or working my full time job at my local Animal Control facility back at home, I run a small business where I hand bead buffalo skulls for both clients and myself. Each skull takes anywhere from 20-48 hours, so I have spent lots of time working on skulls. A. As of right now I’m a multiple high school state art symposium champion, as well as a multiple state and county fair visual arts champion. B. My high school art teacher was the one who pushed me to start making them for other people and to take any opportunity I could to get my name out there. He’s still one of my greatest supporters from over 200 miles away. C. I recently donated a pistol pete skull to the 2018 University of Wyoming Alumni association auction that was held in Cheyenne in September. It was purchased for over $2000! D. I’ve worked on skulls for the past 5 years. I have worked really hard to have my work recognized and appreciated. It’s been a very large part of my life for many many years. E. Recently I started social media pages under the name “Skulls by Sophie” to have my art recognized even more and opened my own Etsy shop.

(Signpost: These are all the reasons that my buffalo skull tattoo is my most significant tattoo out of the three that I have.) Conclusion Today I’ve talked about the symbolic meaning of my tattoo and how buffalo skulls are the face of my business. But personally I feel that even if I wouldn’t have started a business and stuck to just making them for myself to compete with, they still would have a great significance to my life. They are a pretty big reason that I chose to pursue a degree in Art Education because I wanted people to love art the way that I fall in love with every school that I complete....
