Description

Topic: Why the Flu Shot if Necessary General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose: As a result of my speech, the audience will be persuaded to receive the flu shot each flu season. Preview: I will discuss the importance of the flu shot, success stories of the flu shot, reasons to receive the flu shot, and stories about those who did not receive the flu shot. Organizational Pattern: Topical CMM Persuasive Speech Introduction I. Over half of the people in the US avoid getting the flu shot. Why? Well some people are just outright afraid of needles and don’t want to deal with the muscle aches or fatigue. Most people don’t want someone poking at them with a needle. To add more insult, people just tend to say they get sick anyways after getting the flu shot. (nbcnews) Body I. What is influenza? A. Influenza is a viral infection that attacks the respiratory system- nose, throat, and lungs. We all know the common name for influenza, the flu. The individuals who are at a higher risk for the flu are children under the age of 5, but especially below the age of 2, adults older than 65 years old, residents of residence facilities, pregnant women, people with weak immune systems, people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, and obese people. (mayo clinic) II. Symptoms of the flu A. The flu starts off with symptoms of the common cold with a runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat but in a quicker fashion. The most common symptoms of the flu are: temperature over 100.4, body aches, headache, dry, persistent cough, fatigue and weakness, congestion, and a sore throat. (mayo clinic) III. Causes of the flu A. Flu viruses travel through the air in droplet when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can be inhaled directly or come in contact directly through an object. People with the flu can be contagious up to 10 days after symptoms appear. These influenza virus strains are constantly changing, so if you’ve had the flu before, your body may have the antibodies to protect you with the same strain of the flu, but with a new subtype it cannot. (CDC) IV. Why should college students get the flu shot?

1. The flu vaccine is the best way to prevent yourself from getting sick and from spreading the flu to others. a) The flu is easily spread in enclosed spaces with many people, Eiras says. Schools and offices are hotspots for transmission. b) The more people get vaccinated, the less flu can spread among a community. (buzzfeed) 2. More importantly, the flu shot saves lives and keeps people out of the hospital — because the flu can be deadly. a) The CDC estimates that since 2010, there have been between 140,000 and 710,000 flu-related hospitalizations and 12,000 to 56,000 flu-related deaths. (buzzfeed) 3. And no, you will NOT get the flu from a flu shot, but the side effects can make you feel crummy for a day or two. a) The flu shot cannot give you the flu! Flu vaccines that are administered with a needle are currently made in two ways: the vaccine is made either with a) flu vaccine viruses that have been ‘inactivated’ and are therefore not infectious, or b) with no flu vaccine viruses at all (which is the case for recombinant influenza vaccine). The nasal spray flu vaccine does contain live viruses. However, the viruses are attenuated (weakened), and therefore cannot cause flu illness. (buzzfeed) 4. It isn't better to just get the flu and ride it out, because then you put others around you at risk.

B. C. D. E.

a) “If I just get the flu and ride it out, then my body will develop antibodies and I'll have a better immune system at the end of it all”. This is another misconception — getting the flu is not better than getting a flu shot, Eiras says. And why get sick when you can achieve the same immune response from a shot? Not only can going unvaccinated put you at risk for developing a serious illness that knocks you out of work or school for weeks (or even lands you in the hospital), but going unvaccinated also puts other people at risk. (buzzfeed) Young adults may not be at the highest risk of getting the flu, but that does not make one not possible of getting the flu. Across college campuses, the vaccination rates are as low as 8% and as high as 39%. (nbcnews) The flu can spread quickly through dorms, restrooms, or classrooms. Those who do get the flu can miss up to 8 days of class. (buzzfeed)

Conclusion I. College students may not be at high risk to get the flu and die from it, we are still able to pass the bug around to those who are! Such as babies, the elderly, or those with weak immune systems. II. Regardless, everyone should be vaccinated with the flu shot and it’s not too late. Flu season in the US typically peaks in February, but it can start as early as October, so you should get your shot soon.
