Description

The Correlation Between Videogames and Violent Activities Justin Voss I.

II.

Intro A. Hook: (relatable story) 1. I can still remember the very first video game console I received. I was in first grade, and my brothers and I were overjoyed to finally get the Nintendo Wii for Christmas. I can still remember playing games like Wii Sports, Super Mario Brothers, and Mario Kart. I am sure that all of you have played at least one video game in your life. Or at least, you know a person that plays video games. Overall, video games are very prevalent in our lives. B. The topic of video games has caused some controversy in the last decade. There has been a debate on whether video games cause violent criminal behavior. I am here today to explain why video games do not cause violent behavior. I will do this by countering common arguments that people have for relating video games with C. Persuasive Technique: Problem-Solution (Argument-Counter argument) pattern D. Implemented by: 1. Presenting a common argument, and countering the argument with facts and relatable information 2. Maintaining a statement of logical reasons, 3. Telling facts from credible sources, 4. Appealing to the audience with own experiences Body A. Argument: Many criminals who have committed violent crimes have frequently played violent video games: 1. A recent example reported from AP News was the shooter in El Paso who killed 23 people. 2. He later mentioned that he played Call of Duty, which is a violent video game. (Penttila) 3. Many people blamed the violent video games he claimed to play for his actions. They correspond to many of these cases with the fact that many of these perpetrators have played violent video games. 4. However, in every case of a person involved with violent activities, the perpetrator has a much stronger motive and cause than video games. 5. In the case of the El Paso shooter, the shooter had written out a manifesto of his motives for the shooting. The manifest says that his motives were a “response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas”. When conducting

investigations, there was no evidence found that video games had anything to do with his violent actions. (Penttila) 6. He was motivated by racist ideals, not because of video games. 7. Many times people who blame video games are trying to find a scapegoat for the real problem, which could be mental health or racial issues. 8. Overall, in every recent instance of violent criminal activity, there has been not enough supportable evidence to show that video games are a cause for the event. (Penttila) B. Many kids have aggressive behavior while and right after playing video games, which can lead to permanent aggressive and violent behavior. 1. There is no denying that some people get angry and aggressive during video games. 2. However, I would compare this kind of anger with getting mad when missing a goal or basket in a sport. 3. I will bet that all of you have become suddenly aggressive or angry when doing something you are passionate about. Everyone has these emotions. 4. This does not mean that you are forever going to be defined by that emotion. 5. The Royal Society video game study: a) A study published by The Royal Society concluded that there were no long-term effects of aggression caused by violent video games. b) They specifically researched a group of kids and studied their behavior after being exposed to video games. c) There was not enough evidence to provide any conclusion that video games cause aggression among young kids. 6. Benjamin Burroughs, a professor of emerging media at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas says: a) All studies he conducted showed that there was no relation between video games and active violence. (Anderson) 7. The effects of video games can be compared to a sad movie. It can make you sad during the actual movie, but it does not make you that way for the rest of your life. (Anderson) C. Looking at both of these arguments: 1. When looking over both of these arguments, it seems like many people want something to blame when violent activities come up. 2. Video games have been an easy target to go against, as many of these companies cannot back themselves with lobbies as other groups can. (Anderson) 3. Many times people are continuing to look past the real issues that people have, like mental health issues and racist ideals.

III.

4. This causes video games to be a common scapegoat for violence. Conclusion: A. I have gone over two major reasons that people blame video games for violent criminal behavior. I have then countered the arguments and have tried to prove to you that there is no evidence relating video games to violent behaviors. B. Even today, news stations still try to set the blame of violence on video games. I would like to advise you all to keep in mind the different viewpoints of a topic. If you take every piece of evidence into account, you can have a better picture of what is going on. C. I would like to encourage you to look at the facts and research presented and make up your mind about what is really going on. D. Bibliography:
