Indocrinating the Importance of COVID-19’s Vaccines Purpose

: To persuade

Specific Purpose

: I would like to persuade my audience that taking vaccine is important

Thesis Statement

: I would like to share what is the importance to be vaccinated to oneself and society

Introduction I.

Attention Getter: Worrying and suffocating. That is what all of us are feeling when recently the number of cases of COVID-19 in Malaysia spiked up exceeding 9000 new cases per day. We have already won the first round of war with COVID-19 last year when we achieved 0 new cases within our society as reported on 1st of July 2020 but everything went downhill since the first half victory we achieved. Things happened and now we are stuck in this endless cycle of isolating and staying at home and as well as always-changing SOP and policy from the authorities. A glimmer of hope has struck upon us to achieve nation-free of COVID-19 when the government announced that the authorities are buying the vaccines from the providers but the number of people getting vaccinated each day may drove us back into the darkness and not to forget the abundance numbers of people speculating that vaccine is harmful as it contains microchip and whatnot.

II.

Establish Credibility: I have study articles written by researchers who are well-known about their works and finding about public health issues. Besides that, I have also read some official statements and reports from international organizations like WHO and PAHO that provided me with an analysis of the importance of getting people vaccinated. Not to forget, I have also watched a documentary titled “Protecting Health: Saving Lives” by Immunization Action Coalition (IAC). Thus, I strongly believe that it is a must for all of us to get educated on why getting vaccinated is important.

III.

Thesis Statement: Based on my findings, I have chosen three main reasons on why getting vaccinated is important which are it can offers protection for individuals, vaccine can help society to form a barrier of protection and vaccine will be a crucial instrument in the fight against this pandemic.

Body 1. Vaccine can offers protection for individuals a. The content of vaccine i. There are few types of vaccine that are authorized to be use in Malaysia such as Pfizer-BioNTech, Sinovac and as well as AstraZeneca. ii. The vaccines are usually made off sucrose, acidity regulators such as Histidine, sodium, potassium salts and as well as active ingredients which contains the genetic code for the coronavirus spike protein. iii. For practicing Muslim, the usage of vaccine is permissible for normal citizen and mandatory for groups that have been identified by the government as explained by Special Muzakarah Committee of the National Council for the National Council for the Islamic Religious Affairs. b. Vaccine is safe for consumption for most of us i. All COVID-19 vaccines in development are being thoroughly tested in clinical trials, and will only be permitted or licensed if they significantly reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19. ii. There are 4 set of rules that must be comply during the process of testing according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure its safety due to the fact that FDA set high safety standards for vaccine developers to meet. iii. There are isolated cases of death in the US and Germany, but as of today there is no cases of death due to vaccination reported in Malaysia. c. Vaccine is effective to combat the virus i. COVID-19 vaccinations are very effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalization, and death. ii. The vaccine is not a cure to the virus but it helps to reduce the chance of getting infected. iii. Even if a person gets infected, the risk of suffering from severe conditions and death will be greatly reduced. 2. Vaccine can help a society to form a barrier of protection. a. Vaccine is the key to achieve herd immunity i. Herd immunity is when a large fraction of a community develops immunity to an infectious disease, the likelihood of transmission from person to person reduces. Those who aren't immune are protected indirectly since the disease's progress is so slow.

ii. Take poliovirus as example, where the last major outbreak of wild poliovirus cases happened in 1977 and the last reported case of poliovirus was in 1992 as reported by Family Health Development Division of Malaysia. iii. This was achieved throughout the vaccination schedule of Malaysia in which it is required for new born babies to be vaccinated at the age of 2, 3 and 5 months. b. Reverting back to normal life i. After a group of people has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, they may be allowed to resume activities that they had put on hold due to the pandemic. ii. They can, for example, gather indoors without masks with other fully vaccinated people. iii. This also means that religious or cultural gathering can also be done since everyone has completed their vaccine’s dose. c. COVID-19 vaccine may provide some protection known as natural immunity. i. Natural immunity as well as vaccine-induced immunity are significant components of COVID-19 illness. ii. Getting vaccinated can help protect those around you, especially those who are at higher risk of serious disease from COVID-19. iii. A growing body of research suggests that those who have been fully vaccinated are less likely to be infected without showing symptoms, a condition known as asymptomatic infection, and are also less likely to spread the COVID-19 virus to others. 3. Vaccine will be a crucial instrument in the fight against the pandemic a. Achieving nation-free COVID-19 i. Once the majority of the people has been vaccinated, the number of cases will eventually fall. ii. This can be seen from the number of cases that drops from 60000 new cases per day in January to 4028 number of cases since the national vaccination program started. b. Recover the economy i. According to Department of Statistics Malaysia, as of the end of 2020 there are about 772900 Malaysians have lost their job due to the pandemic. ii. The safer the situation for all of us, the economy sectors can run like usual. iii. Sectors such as tourism, aviation and the SMEs can be reopened to ensure the cash flow in Malaysia does not drop.

c. The wellbeing of the citizen i. By having lower number of cases, the number of death can also be reduced ii. When the number of cases drop and people do not have to quarantine themselves anymore, the mental health issues will be greatly reduced as we all know staying at home for a long period of time is not good for the mental state of a person. iii. Family can be reunited, parents will be able to see their children d. The education system can be revamped i. Lots of talents and time were wasted during the pandemic because school cannot be opened and university are asked to conduct their classes in online class. ii. Education is one of the most important things to be addressed because a lot of students were left out due to their circumstances. Conclusion 1. Summary statement: In conclusion, an individual getting vaccinated have a huge impact not only to the person, but it will also help the society and as well as the country itself. This shows that how important is getting vaccinated. The points I have made should be enough to make us opt for the vaccine when its available. 2. Memorable concluding remark: I would like to quote the vaccine hero, Susanne Bjelbo in which she said that, “vaccination is crucial in terms of ensuring overall health and well-being”. So people, get vaccinated and we can stop this pandemic maybe not globally but it would be nice to be able to revert back to our old life in Malaysia as soon as possible.
