COM-E173 Professor Kim B. Williams

Topic: The Benefits of playing video games Specific Purpose: To persuade my COM-E173 class on why videogames are actually good for you Central Idea: When videogames were created and evolved over time it reached mainstream popularity even till this day of age as a form of entertainment and part of modern culture. However, there is a stigma about video games being generally bad for you such as ruining your eyes, rotting your brain, and increased aggression. But, the truth is quite opposite. INTRODUCTION ATTENTION-GETTER: Slaying beasts, defending yourself from the horde of undead, or maybe traversing through eight worlds bouncing heads of koopas and saving the princess who gets stolen every time? Sounds familiar? If you are anything like me you have tried all of these. Of course not literally, but I’m certain you have played a video game that has let you do something absurd and exciting that you cannot normally do. Relevance to the audience: Raise your hand if you have played a video game before or watched someone play one instead. All of you, I know I have as well. Video games are a huge entertainment activity of all ages. I have done long hours of playing video games and research on the effects of people playing video games. Personal connections: I have played video games by myself or with a group of my close friends almost all the time and noticed positive effects that help my friends and I on a day to day basis.

1. Playing video games affect the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for decision making, social behavior, personality, and cognitive planning which is affected when playing Super Mario 64 which requires gamers to plan ahead and think on how to use and interact with objects in the virtual world (Vince) B. Improves overall memory 1. According to Vince, playing video games affect the right hippocampus that is responsible for processing and consolidating information, as well as short term and long term memory and scientists saw growth due to players using this part of the brain to navigate in open world games such as Mario’s world (Vince) C. Reduces stress 1. According to mentalfloss, it is said that video games reduces stress based on a major study that tracked players over six months and measured heart rate found that certain titles reduced the adrenaline response by 50 percent (Mentalfloss) (Link: Finally, let’s look how video games affect us socially) III. So now we noticed the effect video games have on our physical and mental well being. Playing video games improves our social skills. A. How it improves social skills 1. According to Wilbur, Online multiplayer games such as massive multiplayer online role-playing games forces players to make snap social judgments while playing which makes gamers learn social skills and pro-social behavior that might generalize to their peers and family relations outside the gaming environment at a rapid pace (Wilbur) 2. Playing games with civic experiences, such as guild wars 2 encourages cooperation, helping each other, and engaging in social causes. (Wilbur)
