Topic: My Roommate Tam Purpose: To inform the audience on how living with someone who has a chronic disease, has changed me for the better. Central Idea/Thesis: My roommate has overcome many obstacles, that have inspired me and taught me how to be more empathetic.

INTRODUCTION: I. Attention grabber: How many of you guys know someone you care about, who is suffering from a chronic illness? How many of you guys actually live with this person? II. Reason to listen: Living with someone who is sick, can happen to any of us at anytime, and I want to share my experience of meeting someone for the first time who is sick, and then being forced to live with them. III. Establish credibility: I feel as though I am credible to tell my roommates story, and journey because I have been fortunate enough to live with her for seven months. IV. Preview/Transition: Today I will be talking about My roommate Tam who has a Chronic Kidney Disease, also known as CKD, and how she came into my life.

BODY: I. First main point: When I first came in contact with Tam over summer, she told me about her disease, and ultimately, I was terrified. A. Subpoint: I have never lived with anyone who is sick, so now in college being forced to live with Tam, I knew I would have to be up to the task of watching over her, and making sure she’s okay.

1. Sub-Subpoint: Here’s what I can tell you: her freshman year of high school she was diagnosed with CKD, and over the time of 3 years, both of her kidneys failed. 2. Sub-Subpoint: With time against Tam, her father knew what would be her fate if a solution wasn’t given to her fast. Thankfully, In March of last year, Tam’s father saw the opportunity to give his child a new form life, and was tested to see if he was a match. B. Subpoint: Thankfully for Tam and for me, her body reacted successfully to her new kidney. I am fortunate enough to now be living with tam as my roommate and she never lets her illness defy her. 1. Sub-Subpoint:Since we have moved in with each other, I have been there for Tam every time she has gotten sick, not because it’s my unofficial obligation as her roommate, but because it my duty as her friend. 2. Sub-Subpoint:: I help remind tam to take her medication, and accompany her whenever she needs to see a doctor of any kind. 3. Transition to second main point: We do everything together, to watching movies, going out for dinner, our homework, and midnight long talks that comes along with any strong friendship.

II. Second main point: A. Subpoint: Even though Tam and I come from two different life stories, we both have faced different adversities that make us appreciate life and appreciate that we both are fortunate enough to be where we are today, pursuing our education. 1. Sub-Subpoint: I never see Tam as anything else than just my loyal friend. She doesn’t let her past define her present and future and I admire her for that. 2. Sub-Subpoint: Tam and I play board games together, have karaoke nights, and we give each other advice for whatever we are facing. B. Subpoint: Living with Tam has made me appreciate that she’s in my life and everyday I am proud that I get to call her my roommate and friend. 1. Sub-Subpoint: Although we seem like the most unlikely of friendships, we just get each other and we accept eachother for every flaw the other has to offer.

2. Sub-Subpoint: I believe me and Tam were meant to be roommates because God knew that I could handle her and all of her baggage that came with being her roommate. 3. Transition to Conclusion: All in all, Tam has defied all odds, and she is very fierce.

CONCLUSION: I. Signal the ending: In conclusion, Tam is my most loyal and best friend up here, and I know she will be apart of my life for a long time. II. Clincher: So even though most of you don’t live with someone who is chronically ill, or care about someone who is, just know these things can happen to anyone....
