HIST 257 ETHNOGRAPHY, HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE BUKHARIAN JEWS Tuesday, 4:30pm - 7:20pm Room Kiely Hall 425 ============================================================================= Manashe Khaimov, MSW. 3 credits [email protected] Office hours: by appointment ============================================================================= Course Description: This course offers an overview of the ethnography, history and culture of the Bukharian Jews, one of the oldest Jewish communities formed in Central Asia as an independent ethnos with a special way of life, its own language, and well defined national ethnic self-identification. The course will look at the origins of the Jewish population in Central Asia and will concentrate on the 19th century (period of Russian conquest of the region in 1865) and 20th century till the present time (massive exodus from the former Soviet Union), when the new communities were developed in Israel and the USA. By the end of the semester, students are expected to have acquired a literacy, if not fluency, in the development of the Bukharian Jewish ethnos in Central Asia, its achievements and downfall, community, culture, traditions, music, language and literature.

ASSIGNMENTS All papers are to be formatted according to the style guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA) 6th Edition. They should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins and appropriate use of headings to guide the reader and present the paper in an organized manner. APA formatting is not required for Blackboard posts. It is expected, however, that statements made on Blackboard are supported by evidence from the literature or presented as an opinion.

Mid  Term Paper/ Exam- Historical Origin of Your Family Name (25%) Assignment Due: March 24th Should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins and appropriate use of headings to guide the reader and present the paper in an organized manner. Minimum of four citations. a. Create a Geni account at www.geni.com/. b. Map out your family tree. c. Choose two last names from your family and map out 5-8 generations back as detailed as possible. (Please include the date of birth and death, where is the grave, etc) d. Print out your family tree and attach it to your mid-term paper. i. Write where your family came from? What is your Avlot name - what is the nickname of your family? How did they get this last name or Avlot name? From what country or area did your last name or Avlot originate? What is the meaning of your last name? Avlot name? Clan name? ii. Did you discover anything unusual, interesting or unique about the origin of your last name? Is there a story behind your last name? iii. What is professions the first person from who your last name originated did they had? What period in the book can you relate to when you talk about your family? iv. Choose a time period in the history that might or might not connected with your family but may affect your family in some way. v. What is the struggle? Language ? Emigration? Etc vi. Dive deeper into the cross connection vii. How do you think the choices your family made may or may not affect you? Please connect to the history of the Bukharian community. viii. If you didn't find information historically; what is the reason? e. Connect you family story to what we learned in class. f. If you cannot find information about your family last name, state in your essay that you can't find any information on the internet on it. Tell what you do know about it, if anything, then instead of writing on your last name, write about another family member's name or your first name. g. (5 pages) Max, APA style. h. You need a cover sheet and works cited page. (this is not included in the 5 pages) i. Use bullets j. Give your paper a good name. k. Use other articles books as a source. l. III. Group Presentation (20%) Dates of the presentations: April 21st Group Project In assigned groups, students will view and analyze an assigned documentary. Using class sessions as a guide to discussing the film, please report on the following in a one-page (two-sided) information flyer. Prepare a 15 minute group presentation that highlights what your group has learned from the movies. Make it interesting! Involve the class in some way (e.g. game; role play; Q & A; social action). You may incorporate brief video or audio material, powerpoint, etc. All members do not have to present, but all members must contribute in some way to both paper/flyer/newsletter and presentation. IV. Final Paper (30%) Assignment Due: May 19th In order to fulfil final paper requirement students must visit the Bukharian Jewish Museum and incorporate what they saw at the museum exhibits to what was learned in class. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Select the theme or period from the course and dig a little deeper and research. 8pt Write about how it could be applied into the present time. 5pt Use pictures from the Museum in your paper to illustrate your theme. 3pt How are the struggles of Bukharian Jewish community made the community who they are today? 6pt 5. What historical patterns do you observe that are happening with the Jewish communities. 8pt 6. Conclusion

Tour to the Bukharian Jewish Museum: The requirement of the course is to take a trip to the museum of the Bukharian Jews (Bukharian Ethnographic Society), which is located in Queens (60-05 Woodhaven Blvd, Elmhurst, New York 11373). The museum contains many objects of the history, culture, religion, and existence of the Bukharian Jews. Students include in their writing what they saw at the museum exhibits to what was learned in class. Make sure to read the following before going to the museum: Robert Pinkhasov, Life and Traditions of Bukharian Jews pages 118-122 (Clothing, Jewelry, Habitation, and Cuisine) (5 pages), APA style. Class Participation (15%) After listening to a lecture or participating in a discussion, students may be asked to summarize the main point(s) of the class; this helps to reinforce the idea that history is argument rather than a mere collection of unrelated facts. On other occasions, students may be asked to write down a few ideas about a question in preparation for an ensuing discussion; this helps to focus thought and improve the quality and liveliness of the discussion. In addition, class participation will contribute significantly to determining students’ final grades. Students should come to class ready to discuss and/or present each day’s reading assignments. These requirements will be explained further in class. Expectations Written work is to be turned in the beginning of the class on the day for which it is assigned.
