Description

Brother Wolz TA 115 10 June 2014 Structure: Much Ado About Nothing Every kind story starts out with some kind of exposition, and Shakespeare is no exception. Much Ado About Nothing starts off with the four main characters, Claudio, who likes Hero, and Beatrice and Benedick, who despise each other. As soon as the war is over Claudio decides to get going with his love life, which he believes will involve Hero. The drama in this story begins to unfold when Claudio believes that Don Pedro has stolen his Hero and Benedick and Beatrice are told of his undying love of her. In reality though, Don Pedro is actually trying to woo her in the name of Claudio, not for himself. Claudio then writes off his love for Hero, his friendship with Don Pedro and feels himself a fool for not going after the girl. Meanwhile,  Beatrice and Benedick slowly start to fall out of their hatred for one another and have to deal with the fact that they might in fact be in love. The rising action of this play begins with plenty of complications. Don John, the villain who wants to steal Hero from Claudio plots to ruin their wedding by making it seems like Hero has been disloyal by taking him and Benedick to watch two people making love, making it seem like the woman was Hero when in fact it was actually Hero’s serving woman. All the while my two favorite characters, Beatrice and Benedick fall head over heels for each other but haven’t admitted it to each other yet.

In the climax of the play, Claudio is convinced that it was actually Hero that night and decides on his wedding day to accuse her of lechery, causing her and her father shame on their family. Hero’s family members then pretend that she has died of shock and hide her away until they can reveal the truth. In the aftermath of all of this Beatrice and Benedick finally confess their love for one another. In the end, it was Borachio and his big mouth that led to his and Don John’s arrest after he blabbed about his conquest. Claudio and Don Pedro apologize to Leonato, who gives Claudio a second chance to be in his family by marrying his mystery niece, who, surprise surprise, turns out to be Hero. In the end everyone gets married and lives happily ever after....
