Homer, Iliad (Book One) Study Questions The textbook will help you to answer questions 3 and 4. 1) Give a brief plot summary of the Iliad. When was the epic written? What happens in Book 1, which is the selected reading?  Almost the end of the war  Agamemnon takes Chryseis and Achilles takes Briseis  A plague occurs and Achilles finds out that Apollo is angry  Chryseis’ father works for Apollo and Apollo demands Chryseis back  Agamemnon refuses to return Chryseis until Achilles gives him Briseis  Achilles feels dishonored and Athena arrives to check on his temper  Instead of killing Agamemnon, Achilles abandons the Greek army  Achilles is so mad that he complains to his mom, Thetis, to convince Zeus to side with Trojans  Hera is angry, but her son tells her not to meddle with the affairs of mortals 2) What can be gleaned about Greek society from Book 1 of the Iliad? How did the Greeks view men and women, masculinity and femininity? What is the role of the gods, religion, and sacrifice in Greek society? What other important information can be found in this selection?  Men’s honor cannot be violated  Women are a sort of high-end reward used to recognize men’s hard work  Gods could be a metaphor for the human limit and psyche  The scene of Athena’s appearance  People rely on god’s blessing and maintain order  Gods play a transactional role in people’s destiny 3) Why is the Iliad important in the study of ancient Greek art and archaeology?  One of the most common subjects in media  Many subplots became an important subject in Greek art  Greeks and Trojans were treated like honorable and not treated like cartoons, and there were scenes where the enemy side seems more honorable  What are the values and how do people interact  Concept of success and leadership 4) How has the Iliad affected modern understanding of sites like Mycenae and Troy?  Herodotus doubted the sources and thought they were in Egypt  Mycenaean palaces were fortified to protect themselves, not showing much concern for oversea expansion  Could be a war over trading positions  Could be a small event and magnified
