Romantic Critique of the Enlightenment:
Ourika had legal freedom, education, equality, BUT There was no clear path for her, she was subject to emotional forms of prejudice
The rational assembly was the first stage of the revolution, to achieve goals such as equality which lead to Ourika having her hopes up due to things such as the king getting guillotined and the Santa Domingo incident By the end of the revolution, things like the church came back to power and a monarchy came back into power Looking at the novel and dealing with how it dealt with the issues of enlightenment (how could we look forward and make things actually better):
She is presented as a human with complex feelings and not as an animal
This book wouldn’t have been created without the enlightenment: 1. It created an institution and legal structure for equality 2. However, this novel points out this doesn’t go far enough as you need to address things like prejudices, hearts and feelings of people which cannot be solved only by a legislative way.
