Diem Phuc April 18, 2021 Summary: Addicted to phones April Frawley Birdwell’s research article “Addicted to phones” was originally published by University of Florida News: Health, Research, Technology on January 18th, 2007. Frankly speaking, the author emphasizes several issues of overusing cell phones as well as analyzes its impacts on frequent users’ daily life. According to Birdwell, it is considered to be hard to pinpoint problematic cell phone use as the proliferation of cell phones has soon become more and more significant. Initially, she believes that cell phone overuse would possibly accelerate anxiety, owing to the fact that frequent users can feel anxious if they are forcibly separated from their cell phones. Her research also indicates that addiction to cell phones could exacerbate underlying anxiety and depression or trigger their symptoms to manifest themselves. Moreover, it is evident that the growing problem negatively impacts users’ daily social life. As reported, a remarkable number of studies witness an increasing percentage of cell phone users claiming that they have turned worse off socially due to overusing cell phones; particularly, children and adolescents who own phones refuse to make friends with their less tech-savvy peers and they themselves also claim to be somewhat addicted. Besides, Birdwell argues that upgrading cell phones with more advanced features could probably stimulate users’ addiction to this device. She highlights that addiction also causes changes in brain and puts the same impacts on users’ behaviours as drugs and alcohol. To put things in a nutshell, the essential of cell phones is apparently undeniable; however, setting limits on casual phone usage is also of essential as well....
