Summary Chapter 2: MAJOR GENRES IN LITERARY STUDIES p. 9-27 Book: An Introduction to Literary Studies (third edition) – Mario Klarer Chapter two starts with the classification of literary genres. Usually they are build up upon the triad “epic,” “poetry” and “drama”, but because the genre epic has led to the new prose form of the novel, the major genres in literature are now classified into “fiction”, “poetry” and “drama”. In the paragraph “fiction”, Mario Klarer writes about the novel. The term “novel” can be seen as a number of subgenres. Overall there are seven subgenres. The picaresque novel, epistolary novel, historical novel, utopian novel, science- fiction novel, gothic novel and the detective novel. Precursors of the novel same as the short story are medieval and early modern narrative cycles. Both, novel and shot story, use the sections plot, character, narrative situations and setting to define and discuss the genre and give the story a deeper meaning. The plot contains “What happens?” It refers to the way a story unfolds in a text. The characters contain “Who acts?” You have to distinguish between a round and a flat character. A round character is an individualized character – it has more complex features. A flat character is a typified character – it has only one trait that dominates. And then there´s the narrative situation: “Who speaks and who sees?” The reader has to distinguish between 1. The authorial narrative situation: external narrator with an omniscient point of view – refers to the protagonist in third person. 2. First- person narrative situation: by the protagonist or by a minor character. 3. Figural narrative situation: through figures acting in the story.
