MDRTB = multidrug resistance tuberculosis Both mental health and MDRTB are associated with a large number of DALYs, but get very little attention The “Odd Case” of Mental Health o They are often separated from traditional medical disorders because of the “mind over matter” mentality o We are medicalizing normal sadness  increased apparent prevalence of depression, etc. o Poor countries have greater morbidity from psychiatric disorders than in rich countries because there is less access to treatment o Reported statistics are probably lower than they actually are because of at risk populations not reporting as much (kids and women) o Many mental disorders increase the risk of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and several physical diseases (AIDS, malaria) have been shown to increase the risk of developing mental disorders o Many of the same factors that predispose the global poor to infectious and chronic physical diseases also predispose them to mental illness o Since mental health is not as well understood, there is a greater likelihood of a stigma being attached to a neuropsychiatric diagnosis o Nepal Community Mental Health Project – teach local health workers to assess and treat basic mental disorders in remote areas o WHO – Mental Health GAP Action Programme – encourage delivery of services for mental, neurological, and substance-use disorders in developing countries o Using the disease concept helps physicians to be compensated for time and money spent on patients with neuropsychiatric disorders – they all have DSMs...
