Description

LAST NAME 1 The Mind of a Procrastinator Do you know that there are two types of procrastinators? In the video, “Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator”, Tim Urban discusses the topic of procrastination. He explains how the mind of a procrastinator operates and manages tasks. Within the category of procrastination, there are two types. To differentiate them, three characters are introduced, the Rational DecisionMaker, the Instant Gratification Monkey, and the Panic Monster. Tim Urban shares his beliefs that we are all affected by at least one of the two types of procrastination, and Urban also offers a solution to help manage procrastination. The first type of procrastination is generally not harmful and is seen every day in school and work. It occurs when deadlines are given. This is when the Instant Gratification Monkey appears. Urban explains that our Rational Decision-Maker wants us to be productive, but the Monkey would rather do something else and takes control. When the deadline approaches, you stress out and the Panic Monster wakes up to scare off the Instant Gratification Monkey. This permits the Rational Decision-Maker to take control again and allows you to be productive. However, tasks and assignments get completed in a rush that results in low-quality work. Type two procrastination occurs when there are no deadlines. Thus, the Instant Gratification Monkey and the Rational Decision-Maker are the only characters present. If the Panic Monster never wakes up to scare the monkey, how do you get things done? With this longterm procrastination, tasks are never completed. This results in a problem that is not contained and only extends outward. Urban shares that “It's usually suffered quietly and privately. And it can be the source of a huge amount of long-term unhappiness, and regrets.” (2016). Ultimately, what Tim Urban is trying to convey through his presentation is that we all need to stay conscious of the Instant Gratification Monkey before it deters us from fulfilling our

LAST NAME 2 goals in life. “[W]hen there's deadlines, the effects of procrastination are contained to the short term because the Panic Monster gets involved.” (“Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastination” 00:10:47). Without deadlines, it is easy to stray away from tasks and never complete them. Procrastination will always be a part of our lives in one form or another, but it is time to take control. In Urban’s presentation, he provides a picture of a life calendar that puts into perspective how short life is. We don’t have all the time in the world so there is no time to waste.
