Description

Symone Booker FN 305 Supermarket Assignment The two grains that I selected are a bread and cereal product. The bread product I chose was Nature's Harvest Honey Wheat. It has 2 grams of fiber for each slice of bread. The similar product I found was Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Bread 15 Grain. It has 4 grams of fiber for each slice of bread. The source of fiber was dietary fiber. The cereal product I chose was Grain Berry Antioxidants Cinnamon Frosted Whole Grain Shredded Wheat. It has 5 grams of fiber for each serving. The similar product I found was Raisin Bran cereal. It has 7 grams of fiber for each serving. The source of fiber was dietary fiber. During this shopping trip, I learned that cereal contains more fiber than breads high in whole grain, and are a good alternative to receive your daily fiber intake. I am also now curious in trying the Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Bread as a substitute to the bread I eat now because I think that it will leave me more satisfied after consuming it. Two foods that I found that have a health claim are Cheerios cereal and Smart Balance vegetable oil. Cheerios cereal claims that it "Can help lower cholesterol as part of a heart healthy diet." Smart Balance vegetable oil claims that it "Supports healthy cholesterol levels." Two foods that I found that have a function claim are Slim Fast Balanced Nutrition shakes and Langers Cranberry Plus juice. Slim Fast Balanced Nutrition shakes claim that their product is "Clinically proven [to help you] lose weight [and] keep it off." Langers Cranberry Plus juice claims that "An 8 oz serving gives you 100mg of calcium, [which is] good for healthy bones and teeth." I chose to evaluate the label of Jennie-O's Turkey Store Sweet Italian Turkey Sausage (Lean). The total amount of grams for the product is 545g, the grams of protein is 85g, and the grams of fat is 50g. The comparable product I chose was Foster Farms Oven Roasted Turkey Breast (lunch meat). The total amount of grams for this product is 224g, the grams of protein is 36g, and the grams of fat is 4g. The amount of grams of fat in one serving of the turkey sausage is 10g and 1g for the lunch meat (2 slices). The amount of grams of protein in one serving of the turkey sausage is 17g and 9g for the lunch meat (2 slices). The percent of calories from protein for the turkey sausage is 43% and 80% for the lunch meat. The percent of calories from fat for the turkey sausage is 57% and 20% for the lunch meat. After comparing the fat and protein content in both the turkey sausage and turkey lunch meat, I have learned that turkey meat does not contain a large amount of fat whereas turkey sausage has a greater percentage of fat than protein within its product. My calculations showed me that the turkey sausage has a total of 790 calories of turkey in the 545g serving and that turkey lunch meat has 180 calories of turkey in the 224g serving. In comparison to the turkey sausage, the turkey lunch meat has only 20% of calories from fat whereas the turkey sausage has 57% of calories from fat. I was surprised to learn that the turkey lunch meat has 80% calories from protein and

that the turkey sausage only has 43% of calories from protein. This surprised me because I had the impression that turkey sausage had a higher protein content in comparison to its fat content, and that turkey lunch meat would have a greater fat content than protein....
