Description

Swallowing stones

At this moment there are 7,000,808,671 people in the world. Some are running scared, some are coming home, some tell lies to make it through the day. People are weak when they lie, because they are not strong enough the face the truth. Swallowing stones is a novel written by JOYCE MCDONALD. The main purpose of the author is to show the audience how a lie can lead to a bad consequences if people don’t have the guts to face the situation. Michael, Jenna, Darcy, and Joe are main characters who do not have the courage to face the problems they face.

At first, Michael unknowingly killed Charlie ward after shooting. He had no intention to kill him. Each day he was trying to avoid and escape from the truth. He gets up and pace the room as it he can leave his guilt behind him, but it tracks him as he walks, an ugly shadow made by himself. He wants to be a bird who can fly in the sky without any tensions. His dreams were chasing him. he made a pact to not to tell the truth to the police. He was running away from the truth. As the day goes on, he started to realize he is a looser and coward who commited a crime and was too scared to face the truth.

Similarly to Michael, Jenna also feel guilty for not doing the right thing. She couldn’t accept her father’s death for a long time. She was hiding from the truth. She felt like a looser not being a good listener. She blamed herself for the situation instead of facing the truth she still lies to her boy friend Jason. She does not have the courage to tell Jason she

does not want to be with him. She is too scare to show the world who she really is. Amy’s letter made her cry but still she doesn’t want tell that two others. Sympathy is just a easy word for her. Pain was suffocating her but still she did not know what to do. She did not know how to release her pain

Joe Sadowsky , Michel’s best friend was going through the same pain. He always had low self-esteem about himself. He did not dare to tell Michel how much he hates him for not telling the cops the truth. He can not go up to Amy and call her a slut. He has no courage. He thinks he is a looser. Michel was his only friend. He did not tell him the truth that he had Michel’s rifle on his birthday. He also did not tell the police about what happened on 4th of July on Michel’s birthday.

People learn from their mistakes. They learn how to face the problem. They relive their pain after facing their fear. So the moral of the story is “confess the truth don’t be a coward”...
