This course is the foundational component of the Cognitive Science degree at UC Merced. The Program Learning Outcomes for the Cognitive Science degree include a basic understanding of neuroscience, computer science, psychology, philosophy, and linguistics (see Figure 1), as well as familiarity with technical skills such as computer programming, neural network design, statistics, formal logic, experimental design, and laboratory skills. Cognitive Science majors will have skills that are optimally marketable in both industry and in academia. As a required course for both the Cognitive Science major and minor, Introduction to Cognitive Science provides exposure to a variety of disciplines, with particular focus on how they cooperate to study human thought and behavior. The Student Learning Outcomes for this introductory course are the following: i) Students will acquire familiarity with the divergent theoretical frameworks of philosophy of mind, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, theoretical linguistics, and artificial intelligence. ii) Students will acquire familiarity with the vastly different methods of data collection and analysis used in philosophy of mind, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, theoretical linguistics, and artificial intelligence. iii) Students will acquire basic knowledge of formal logic, experimental design, statistics, linguistic formalism, computing theory, and the brain. Course Website: The COGS 1 website is accessible via UCMCROPS Grade Determination: There are three exams in this course, each contributing to a portion of each student’s grade: Midterm #1 (25%), Midterm #2 (25%), and the cumulative Final Exam (35%). A further 15% of each student’s grade is based on attendance and participation in discussion sections. Finally, an extra credit of up to 5% of the grade is based on participation in laboratory cognitive science experiments. Students can earn up to a maximum of 5 extra credit points (5% added to total grade), via the SONA experiment sign-up website: http://ucmerced.sona-systems.com/. If a student is under 18 years of age (and thus not eligible for participation in laboratory cognitive science experiments), or prefers not to participate in these experiments, the student can turn in an 8-page paper on a cognitive science topic instead for the same 5 extra credit points (5% of grade).

Exams: Approximately 2/3 of each exam will be multiple choice, with the remaining 1/3 being short answer. Special Accommodations: If you qualify for accommodations because of a disability, please submit a letter from Disability Services to the instructor in a timely manner so that your needs may be addressed. Student Affairs determines accommodations based on documented disabilities. The instructor will make every effort to accommodate all students who, because of religious obligations, have conflicts with scheduled exams, assignments, or required attendance. Please speak with the instructor during the first week of class regarding any potential academic adjustments or accommodations that may arise due to religious beliefs during this term.
