Lectures You are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures. Questions on quizzes and the final exam will be from material covered in lecture. I will post lecture outlines on Canvas, so you can print a copy ahead of time for note-taking. These are outlines only, no visuals, or PowerPoint© presentations will be posted on Canvas. The readings in the textbook are important. However, I won’t test you on anything we haven’t discussed in class (i.e. no obscure facts buried in the book). The book and related website also contains lots of useful graphics and additional information that will be useful for studying for quizzes and exams. In-Class Activities/Exercises/Pop Quizzes There will be two in-class exercises, and several pop in-class quizzes, which in total will count for 30% of your overall grade. Exams/Weekly Quizzes There will be no midterm exams, instead quizzes will be given most every week during class. These regular, scheduled quizzes will count for 40% of your overall grade. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Quizzes will cover material from the lectures and readings. The final exam will be given as scheduled by the university, on Friday, December 6 from 4:00-5:45 in Mendenhall 100. The final exam is comprehensive and will total 30% of your grade. Please see me at any point during the semester if you have questions or 1

concerns. You will only be allowed a make-up quiz for unforeseen events, if you present

evidence of a valid medical excuse or family emergency, and notify me before the quiz or as soon as possible. Graded quizzes will be handed back, in most cases the next week. If not picked up they will be available in my office. You should pick up all your quizzes and activities to study for the final exam and as a check on the grades listed in Carmen. Extra Credit An extra credit assignment is available. It consists of a discussion of an Earth Science book selected from a list provided by Dr. Cox. The paper will consist of three to four pages, 12 pt. font, double spaced, with one inch margins. Talk with me before/after class to get approval for your topic, if it is for a book that is not on the list. A maximum of 25 points may be earned from completing this assignment. These points will be added to the grade you earn on the final exam. I expect you to use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The paper should have an opening, topical paragraph and a closing summary paragraph. Please proofread the paper before handing it in. All extra credit papers are due as hard copies by the last day of class, Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Grading Quizzes (10 of 11) In-class Exercises (2)/ Pop quizzes Final Exam Total
