Course Objectives Introduction to statistical thinking and understanding includes strengths and limitations of basic experimental designs, as well as graphical and numerical summaries of data, inference, and regression as a descriptive tool. The overall goal of this class is to introduce you to the discipline of statistics as a science of understanding and data analysis. This class is designed to provide you with the tools you need for solving real world problems using statistics while giving you a better understanding of the process of scientific research and statistical inference.

Course Material 

1. Textbook (recommended): o Introductory Statistics: Exploring the World Through Data, Second Edition by Gould and Ryan. Or, o Essential Statistics: Exploring the World Through Data, Second Edition by Gould, Ryan and Wong. – This book is exactly same as the first book but contain only the first 10 chapters. Enough for this course.

2. Course website: All important information pertaining to the course will be posted on https://ccle.ucla.edu . Lecture notes, quizzes, lab material, and exams will be posted on the site. Please be sure to check it on a regular basis to make sure you do not miss any important information.

3. Laptop for lectures and labs : This course requires that you own/rent a laptop for lectures and lab sessions. If you do not have a suitable laptop to use, then you can borrow one from CLICC. Information about this is available here: https://www.library.ucla.edu/clicc/lending-laptops .

4. Software : You are required to install two software:

o R and Rstudio for lab sessions : You need to download and install both R and Rstudio before you come to the first lab session on June 23rd. Instruction for the download and installation is provided in the first page of lab 1 manual. o Respondus : You are required to install Respondus by the end of Week 2 to take the first online exam in Week 3. 

4. Reference for Labs (optional) : Introductory Statistics with R, 2nd Edition, by Peter Dalgaard. This is a good reference for learning R, which you will need for the labs. The book is available for free to UCLA students through Springer Link. You must access it via a campus computer or using the BOL VPN. Springer Link page: http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-0-387-790541

Assessment  Lecture Check-up assignments (20%) Lectures are recorded and posted on CCLE before the regular lecture time. You are expected to watch the recorded lecture and answer a few checkup questions by the next day of the lecture. Your answers are not graded, i.e., you will get the credit based on “completion”. There will be eight check-up assignments and you may miss the due for one assignment without losing point.  Online quizzes (20% total) There will be four online quizzes. Each quiz is opened on Saturday 10am of the scheduled weeks (see schedule below) at CCLE and closed on the following Monday 11pm. They are open book quizzes, all in multiple-choice questions, and you are allowed to take it only once. No make-up quiz will be provided in any case. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.  Lab (20% total) There will be three lab assignments. The TA will guide you through the lab assignments during the lab sessions. Every lab assignment must be submitted online on CCLE in PDF format. (See the schedule below to check the dues.) No hard copies or e-mails of any work will be accepted. No lab grade is dropped.  Exams (20% each; 40% total) We have two online exams. The first exam is on July 9th (Week 3) and the second exam is on July 30th (Week 6). You are required to install Respondus to take the exams. Detailed information about the exams, including time, length, and format will be discussed later.

Important Course policies 1. Timezone and lab sessions: The course honors students in different time zones. Recording of TA sessions will be available upon the request. Students, who are unable to join in Zoom synchronous TA sessions, are responsible to watch the recordings, complete

the required assignments, and actively ask for help if needed. Also, students should understand the due dates and times in Pacific Standard Time. 2. Collaboration policy in lab assignments: Collaboration is allowed in solving lab problems, but each student must submit independently written solutions that adhere to the university policy on academic integrity. Finding and using solutions online is considered academically dishonest. 3. Copyright policy: All course materials (lecture slides, lab assignments, quiz questions, sample exam questions, etc.) are intended for personal use only for students who are enrolled in Stats 10 Lec 1 in Summer 2020. Do not post, share, or distribute any portion of any course materials to anyone or anywhere, either electronically or physically, without explicit written consent by the instructor, even after the session is over. Failure to comply is a violation of academic integrity and copyright infringement against the author(s) of the course materials. Please review https://www.deanofstudents.ucla.edu/Individual-Student-Code#unauthsalusemater14 4. Review policy: You have right to request for review any of your graded work, including participation. Your request should be made within ONE WEEK after the grades are released. After one week of review period, all grades will be final. 5. No extra credit in any case. 6. Final letter grades will be given by the following guideline (no rounding): A+ : 97~100%, A : 93~96.999%, A- : 90~92.999%, B+ : 87~89.999%, B : 83~86.999%, B- : 80~82.999%, C+ : 77~79.999%, C : 73~76.999%, C- : 70~72.999%, and so on. 7. Final grades will be curved if either 1) the highest grade is less than 90%, or 2) the average grade is less than 75%. Otherwise, the letter grades will be given with the guideline listed above.

Academic Integrity - A Bruin’s Code of Conduct UCLA is a community of scholars committed to the values of integrity. In this community, all members including faculty, staff, and students alike are responsible for maintaining the highest standards of academic honesty and quality of academic work. As a student and member of the UCLA community, you are expected to demonstrate integrity in all of your academic endeavors. When accusations of academic dishonesty occur, the Office of the Dean of Students investigates and adjudicates suspected violations of this student code. Unacceptable behavior include cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, multiple submissions without instructor permission, using unauthorized study aids, or facilitating academic misconduct. Please review our campus’ policy on academic integrity in the UCLA Student Conduct Code: http://www.deanofstudents.ucla.edu/Student-Conduct-Code. We cannot make exceptions to our campus’ policy on academic integrity, and as we hopefully have communicated effectively here, penalties for violations of this policy are harsh. Please do not believe it if you hear that “everyone does it”. The truth is, you usually don’t hear about imposed disciplinary actions because they are kept confidential. So our advice, just don’t do it! Let’s embrace what it means to be a true Bruin and together be committed to the values of integrity....
