DescriptionoftheCourse: ThiscourseexploresvisualartsandculturesofAsia(primarilyfromIndia,China,andJapan).Through theexaminationsofartobjects—sculpture,painting,architecture,andritualobjects—theclasswillstudy thethemessurroundingartandritual,politicalinterestsinart,nationalidentityissues,socialclassesand artisticrepresentations,andthelinksbetweenliteratureandvisualarts.Wealsostudythebasictenets ofHinduism,Buddhism,andConfucianismtounderstandassociatedartisticconcepts.
LearningObjectivesforArtHistory: TofamiliarizewithvisualartsandculturesofAsia Todevelopanabilitytoanalyze,interpret,andwriteonvisualworksofartfromAsia. TolearntocontextualizeculturalandhistoricalsignificanceofAsianartworks. Criticalthinkingabilityinresponsetoscholarlyliterature.
