Course description: This is an introductory finance course that develops the basic concepts and tools applicable to corporate financial decisions. Two main tasks of financial managers are studied: project evaluation and financing decisions. Specific topics include present value calculation, valuation of stocks and bonds, investment criteria and capital budgeting, risk and return, cost of capital, and capital structure. Corporate ethics is also incorporated in the discussions.
Course objective: 1. To introduce basic concepts, tools and theories in finance. 2. To train financial decision making abilities in corporate and personal finance. 3. To prepare students for their next level finance courses.

FINA1310 A/B/C are held face-to-face for the whole semester unless notified otherwise by the University later.

One of the lectures will be recorded and uploaded to Moodle. Slides in pdf will be posted as well.
There will be an optional online review session (date and time TBA) before the final exam.
II. Participation and engagement Participation grades will reflect students’ activity during face-to-face classes and tutorial sessions. Students that cannot come to Hong Kong due to pandemic situation (subclass 1A1) can
either earn participation scores by attending office hours virtually, communicating with the instructor and/or TAs via emails, or choose to increase the weight of the final exam in the overall assessment (that is, the weight of the final will be 65% instead of 55%). Students in this subclass should notify the instructor about their choice by September 20.
III. Homework assignments: There will be four home assignments. Students are supposed to work in groups of no more than four people on the assignments (one submission per group is expected). The deadline for the group formation is the week of September 20 (precise date/time are TBA). If a student has problems with forming a group, he/she should let TA or instructor know as soon as possible. Once formed, students are not allowed to change their groups. See Tentative Timetable for approximate dates of assignment deadlines. Specific dates/times are TBA.
IV. Midterm and final: Exams are closed book and held face-to-face. For students in subclass 1A1 (those who cannot be in Hong Kong due to pandemic situation), there will be special arrangements. Students are allowed to use financial or other non-programmable calculators. Please refer to the following list of

http://www.exam.hku.hk/pdf/list.of.cal_092019.pdf. Excel/other software are not allowed during the exams. The midterm will be held during the week of October, 18 (specific date/time TBA). The final exam date will be determined later by the exam office. The midterm focuses on the topics covered by the reading week, and the final exam covers all topics.
