Riccardi, DNP, RN, CPNP Office Hours: By appointment Email: [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION Basic understanding of the discipline of epidemiology: research designs and sources of bias in epidemiological research; and the epidemiological approach to infectious and chronic diseases. Physical inactivity as a risk factor for chronic disease is discussed. COURSE RATIONALE Health professionals of all types must have a fundamental understanding of the discipline of epidemiology to understand health problems in populations and clinical settings, and to develop interventions. COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of this course students will: ● Develop a basic understanding of epidemiologic research methods used in public health and the health services professions; ● Understand how descriptive epidemiology is used to understand patterns of disease, injury, and health in populations; ● Determine the appropriate application of counts, rates, and proportions for understanding and comparing patterns of diseases in populations; ● Differentiate between crude, specific, and adjusted rates and understand the rationale for using each; ● Explain basic epidemiologic study designs and discuss the features, strengths, limitations and applications of each; ● Understand the difference between association and causation; ● Explain criteria for drawing causal inferences; ● Effectively communicate epidemiologic data (orally and in writing); ● Apply epidemiologic research to current issues.
