SUGGESTED BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Basic knowledge of the financial system is useful.

MISSION The course focuses on the role of banks and other financial institutions. The course will discuss (1) the main types of financial institutions and the risks they face; (2) banks’ liquidity management and systemic risk; (3) the regulatory framework, with particular emphasis on capital requirements and the resolution framework, and the relationship with accounting; (4) executive compensation (5) the challenges for the financial industry due to the low interest rate environment and the Covid-19 crisis. Particular attention will be devoted to the European banking industry throughout the course.

The course involves lectures, exercise classes, case studies and guest lectures.

Class attendance is not compulsory and attendance will not be recorded. Students are kindly asked to attend the class they are assigned to.

Students are evaluated based on a final (general) exam. The exam is closed book and is composed by multiple choice questions, true/false questions, and exercises based on the entire program of the course. Optional:

Students may also decide to be evaluated through two partial exams. The first partial exam (so called mid-term exam) will take place on October 19 at 2 pm. -

Each partial will count 50% of the final grade

Students must pass both partial exams in order to pass the exam, i.e., you must obtain at least 18 in both of them.

The rules for sitting/registering for the second partial exam follow the same rules as in “Guides to the University Bocconi”. This means that students can take the second partial in the following dates: 1)

15 December 2021 if eligible for the exam session in December; or

2)

in either January 7 or February 1, 2022.

Please note the following concerning the rules for sitting/registering for the second partial exams in the exam sessions at the end of the teaching semester (as in “Guides to the University Bocconi”): students can sit for the 2nd partial exam only once: student registered for the 2nd partial exam in the first exam session after the teaching period will not be allowed to register for the 2nd partial exam in the second exam session after the teaching period students registered for the general exam in the first exam session after the teaching period will not be allowed to register for the 2nd partial exam in the second exam session after the teaching period. checks for accessing the 2nd partial exam in the second exam session after the teaching period will be made on the basis of the exam registration, independently from the student’s attendance at the exam.

Please note that all the class slides are compulsory exam material and have to be carefully prepared for the exam, independently of the time allocated to them in class.

A reading list with precise references will be distributed at the beginning of the course. The relevant book chapters will be available through an e-book edition of the book.
