COURSE$DESCRIPTION$ Overview:3The3objective3of3the3course3is3for3you3to3learn3how3to3read,3understand,3and3 analyze3the3financial3statements3of3most3publicly-traded3companies.33The3course3is3 intended3for3students3with3no3previous3exposure3to3financial3accounting.33A3solid3 understanding3of3the3fundamentals3covered3in3this3course3should3enable3you3to3do3well3in3 more3advanced3finance3and3accounting3courses,3as3well3as3interview3intelligently3for3jobs3 in3finance3and3consulting.3 The3course3begins3with3the3basic3concepts3of3accounting.33We3begin3by3looking3at3the3main3 financial3statements:3balance3sheet,3income3statement,3statement3of3cash3flows,3and3 statement3of3stockholders’3equity.33Particular3attention3is3paid3to3how3these3four3 statements3relate3to3each3other3and3how3they3provide3information3about3the3financial3 health3of3a3company.33We3then3cover3specific3items3from3the3financial3statements3and3apply3 tools3of3analysis3whenever3possible.3 33 3COURSE$MATERIALS$ (Optional)$Textbook:$$Libby,3Libby3and3Short,3Financial'Accounting,'8th'Edition.'Both' regular'edition'and'NYU'custom'edition'are'fine.33The3textbook3is3not3required,3but3 recommended.3The3textbook3covers3the3basic3material3in3the3course,3including3background3 information,3accounting3rules3and3conventions.3I3recommend3you3to3read3the3related3 chapters3before3each3class.3 333 Lecture$Slides:33Most3lectures3will3use3the3aid3of3Powerpoint3slides.33Any3material3included3 in3the3slides3is3fair3game3for3exams.3 33 ASSESSMENT$COMPONENTS$ Homework:333I3will3give3you363homework3assignments,3and3you3only3need3to3submit353of3 them,3i.e.,3you3can3skip3one.3If3you3hand3in3all363of3them,3the3highest353(out3of3the36)3scores3 will3be3counted3in3your3grade.3You3must3submit3a3hardcopy3of3your3completed3homework3 at3the3end3of3class3on3the3date3due;3late3homework3will3get3one3point3off3for3each3day3 delayed.33As3a3record,3please3take3a3photo3of3the3first3page3of3your3homework3before3you3 submit3it.3 3 Exams:$3There3will3be3three3exams:33two3midterms3and3one3final,3all3during3the3 semester.33Final3will3be3cumulative,3with3a3focus3on3the3materials3after3the3second3midterm.3 Please3see3the3course3outline3section3for3more3information.33 3 Grading:$$$ Your3final3grade3is3the3best3out3of3the3following3two3options:33 (1)315%3homework,325%3first3exam,315%3second3exam,340%3final3exam,3and35%3class3 Professionalism;33

No3talking3to3others3during3the3lecture.3If3you3constantly3talk3to3others3during3the3 lecture,3you3may3be3asked3to3leave3the3classroom3and3lose333points3in3class3 professionalism;3 2. No3cell3phones3ringing3and3no3texting3during3class;3 3. Be3on3time;3 4. Actively3participate3in3class3discussion.3 3 SCHEDULING CONFLICTS Only3I3can3grant3permission3to3be3excused3from3a3scheduled3quiz/exam3because3of3a3 scheduling3conflict.3Teaching3assistants3cannot3grant3such3permission.3To3obtain3 permission3to3be3excused3from3a3scheduled3quiz/exam3because3of3a3scheduling3conflict,3 students3must3provide3documented3evidence3of3the3conflict.3Notify3me3via3email3at3least3one3 week3in3advance3of3any3conflicts3with3your3other3courses.3In3case3of3a3legitimate3scheduling3 conflict,3I3will3grant3permission3to3the3student3to3take3the3quiz/exam3early3or3late3under3my3 supervision.3Only3scheduling3conflicts3with3other3courses3or3university3representation3will3 be3considered.3Internship,3interviews,3family3vacation,3or3other3travel3plans3are3not3 acceptable3scheduling3conflicts.3If3you3miss3a3quiz3or3exam3without3permission,3your3grade3 will3be3zero3on3that3quiz/exam.3 3 Only3I3can3grant3permission3to3be3excused3from3a3scheduled3quiz/exam3for3illness.3To3 obtain3permission3to3be3excused3from3a3scheduled3quiz/exam3because3of3illness,3students3 must3provide3documented3evidence3of3the3illness.3A3note3documenting3a3visit3to3health3 services3is3not3a3sufficient3excuse3for3missing3a3quiz/exam.3Minor3illnesses,3including3upper3 respiratory3infections3(i.e.,3colds),3or3fatigue,3are3unacceptable3reasons3for3missing3a3 quiz/exam.3Also,3illness3during3the3time3that3a3student3had3intended3to3study3for3a3 quiz/exam3is3not3an3excuse3for3missing3a3scheduled3quiz/exam.3 3 33 GRADING$ At3NYU3Stern3we3seek3to3teach3challenging3courses3that3allow3students3to3demonstrate3 their3mastery3of3the3subject3matter.33In3general,3students3in3undergraduate3core3courses3 can3expect3a3grading3distribution3where:33 25-35%3of3students3can3expect3to3receive3A’s3for3excellent3work33 50-70%3of3students3can3expect3to3receive3B’s3for3good3or3very3good3work33 5-15%3of3students3can3expect3to3receive3C’s3or3less3for3adequate3or3below3work333 Note3that3while3the3School3uses3these3ranges3as3a3guide,3the3actual3distribution3for3this3 course3and3your3own3grade3will3depend3upon3how3well3you3actually3perform3in3this3course.3 33
