Jimena Garcia Moreno Why is an excitatory synapse on the soma more effective in evoking action potentials in the postsynaptic neuron than an excitatory synapse on the tip of a dendrite? When current enters the sites of synaptic contact it must spread to the spikeinitiation zone; this zone has to be depolarized beyond the threshold for the action potential to be generated. Effectiveness of an excitatory synapse when triggering action potential depends on how far the synapse is from the spikeinitiation zone, because depolarization decreases as a function of distance along the dendrite. The soma is closer to the spike-initiation zone, so an excitatory synapse on the soma is more effective at evoking action potentials than an excitatory synapse on the tip of the dendrite....
