9/26/18 Walmart Stores Versus Target: A Decade Of Growth Walmart and Target are responsible for supplying many families with food, clothing, electronics, health and beauty. Families trust both companies to have what they need when they need it. Even though the two companies sell identical merchandise, they have two different strategies for success. Walmart focuses on offering a broad assortment of quality merchandise and services at everyday low prices. While Target is concerned with delivering a shopping experience that is preferred by customers along with offering everyday essential and fashionable, differentiated merchandise at discounted prices. The diagrams presented in the case study demonstrate interesting facts about Walmart and Target. Over the decade 2003-2012 Walmart has seen a steady increase in sales and locations. While Target sales have experienced a period of increasing and decreasing. Target also has closed some stores down during the decade. So, it is safe to say that during this period Walmart’s success was existing and continuous. So, the next question is what does each store offer that the other one does not? On an international level Walmart exist in more countries that Target does. In addition, Walmart integrates its stores to each countries culture. They aim to develop relationships with local suppliers in each country to

ensure reliable sources of quality merchandise. While Target offers its customers branded credit and debit cards. These cards allow customers to earn discounts when they use the card during checkout. The debit card is called the RED card and target credits the card for strengthening the bond with the guest, driving incremental sales and contributing to the results of operations. To put it briefly both stores have seen tremendous growth since opening in the 1900’s. Target and Walmart each have loyal customers who see great value in their brand. Walmart could improve its brand by creating a in store experience like target does. Target could expand more to generate more customers like Walmart does....
