Applications of Instructional Planning & Presentation- Essay

Active Participation Strategy: Graphic Organizers A graphic organizer (KWL chart) was used as an active participation strategy during the guided portion of the lesson. During this portion of the lesson students watched a short YouTube video and filled out there KWL chart. I used this strategy to activate student’s prior knowledge and to engage students in the lesson. Activating student’s prior knowledge allows students to make connection to new content being taught, enhancing learning (Burden & Byrd, 2013). It was also a great way to examine students at the beginning of the lesson, to see if they possessed the prerequisites to succeed in the lesson or if I would have to review some content before the actual initiation of the lesson. During the experiment portion of the lesson I also used a plant growth observation chart in which students recorded length of plant and wrote down observations.

Grouping Strategy: Cooperative Groups Students worked in cooperative groups (grouping strategy) to complete group experiments. This allowed students the opportunity to help and learn from each other, which is especially important for my gifted and ELL students. The students set up experiments, wrote down observations and discussed what changes, if any they had observed. Using cooperative groups allowed my students to learn to work together and take accountability for their own learning. Students who work in cooperative groups obtain a higher academic achievement, than when students complete task individually or use other learning strategies (Burden & Byrd, 2013). As a result, I decided it would be best to use cooperative groups in this particular lesson.

Technology Strategy: YouTube Video Clip At the introduction of the lesson I used a short video from YouTube. This video talks about plants, and the components that make up a plant. The video also talks about how plants get their energy to grow, and what environmental elements are deemed necessary for them to survive. I used this short video clip to refresh student’s memory, activate prior knowledge, and to introduce the environmental elements that students would have to consider when working on their plant project. I also used this short video to capture students’ interest. According to research students learn best when they receive new information via multiple modalities (Alber, 2019). Thus, the integration of a short video clip would capture students’ interest and engage learning.

Assessment Strategy: Multiple-choice quiz During the lesson, students worked on their plant experiments, focusing on the environmental elements that were deemed necessary for plant survival, while recording their observations on their graphic organizers. At the conclusion of the experiment students should have obtained the knowledge necessary to be able to support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water, on a multiple choice quiz with 80% accuracy. This assessment strategy was chosen as there are several advantages to this form of assessment. Some advantages to multiple choice questions are that it can measure different levels of the cognitive domain, they are very easy to score, and they are less susceptible to guessing (Burden & Byrd, 2013).
