Essay Structure

Essay Introduction An introduction is an overview of the whole essay. It tells the reader exactly what is in the essay. An introduction has three duties that it must perform: 1. Background: An introduction must provide essential background information about the focus of the essay. 2. Answer: An introduction must clearly state the answer to the essay question (the argument). 3. Main Points: An introduction must tell the reader what points are made to support the answer, as well as the order in which the points are presented. Follow the BAM formula: Background: Start with one or two sentence which provides essential background information to help the reader understand the essay’s focus and historical context. This needs to include the topic, time and place. Answer: Then, write a clear statement that answers the essay question directly. Make sure the statement uses the same terms or concepts as the question. If you can’t think of a sophisticated way to write the answer, then just state the obvious, in plain English (i.e. turn the question into a statement). Main Points: Then, summarise the main points that support the answer to the essay question. Write one sentence identifying each point to be discussed in the paragraphs in ‘the body’ of the essay. These sentences usually match the topic sentences in each paragraph, but with different wording. Usually these sentences match the order in which the points are presented in the essay.

A couple of things to avoid in the intro… * Don’t use quotes in the introduction. • Don’t use references. • Don’t use first person in your writing. Keep language formal and impersonal.

• Don’t ask any questions. • Don’t overgeneralise (e.g. “All children hate ... ”). • Don’t be emotive (e.g. “Life was absolutely horrendous … ”).

Body of Essay The body of your essay should contain at least FOUR to FIVE structured paragraphs that will help you answer the question. Paragraph writing in essays You have previously used the TEEEL method to write structured essays. You should use this method to write your essay body paragraphs. Topic sentence Elaboration Evidence/Examples Explanation/evaluation of evidence Link or sum up -

Essay conclusion This is a brief recount of the points made in the body of the essay. Briefly restate your argument without rewriting the introduction. This should be clear, simple and effective. E.g. In Conclusion OR It is evident that…… ESSAY PLAN KEY QUESTION:
