Caitlin Rice 9/6/2021 EDG 4410 Textbook Thinking Questions - Chapter 1 - The Nature of Teaching 2. What is meant by the phrase “teaching is goal driven’? Why do people enter the teaching profession? What motivates people to consider teaching as a career? What are some of the considerations that individuals must make when considering teaching as a career? What are some of the challenges? Rewards? How can teachers influence students? Have you have had teachers who have influenced you? How have these influences shaped your own schooling? What have been your experiences?

What I believe is meant by the phrase, “teaching is goal driven,” is that a teacher who has no goals will not strive to do anything, thus not being the best possible teacher, they can be. A teacher who truly can master the true skill of teaching, is one who is goal driven, someone who perseveres, someone who above all is determined. I believe people enter the teaching profession because they feel they have what it takes to be a teacher, I think most people feel like this job will be easy, I think a lot of people who love kids see teaching as an easy way to be with kids and get paid. I think what motivates people to consider teaching as a career though is quite different. A career in teaching is motivated by a love for schooling, a love for teaching itself, or mostly a love for students. Some of the considerations that individuals must make when considering teaching as a career I believe are, the pay because let’s face it, it is a factor of the job. They also must consider the time that teachers need to put in besides in class time, and finally I feel people need to

consider how tough teaching can be especially that first year. I believe some of the challenges of being a teacher are, certain students who do not want to learn and disrupt class, another challenge is coming up with good fun and engaging lesson plans. Finally, a big challenge for teachers is like our book says, “teaching looks easy…from the outside.” So many people who want to become teachers never realize it is not as easy as it looks. There are rewards to teaching though, “Teachers can be effective and yet not just alike,” I think this is a reward, because every teacher gets the chance to be unique. Each teacher gets a chance to touch some student’s hearts and minds like no one else ever has, and reach their students in completely new ways, that’s what I think is the greatest reward of teaching to me, it is what made me choose teaching. I think by reaching some students in ways no one else has is how certain teachers influence their students, this and engaging their students in every lesson. I feel I have had many teachers influence me; my sixth-grade math teacher, she was by far my favorite teacher ever. She was an amazing teacher, but also there for me in a way no one else was at that time in my life, she even went to my church I later found out. She really influenced me into becoming a math teacher as well as becoming a better person. Her teaching style for math, made it fun for me, and her influence shaped my schooling because it made me interested and engaged in learning to the point where is finished her class with an A. Overall my experiences with my teachers have all been just so amazing, my teachers are what made me want to be a teacher, I also have to thank them because they each helped make me the person and future teacher I am and will become.
