Balancar, Gretchen B BSE- 3 ENG76 (EDA)

10 February 2014 Mr. Roger Garcia The Anting-Anting or Agimat

While reading the text, I learned that there exists the belief on an “anting-anting” or “agimat” which is believed to be a “lucky charm” or amulet, or something that would keep the wearer away from the bad things and will lead him/her towards the good and better things which lies ahead. In our present time, influenced by modernization, slowly, this belief is fading away. Wearing and the beliefs on the “magical power” of agimats no longer serve the purpose that it was way back the old times. It is now imitated by many and used as a decoration, as a spice to new fashion taste/trends, and often mistaken similar to a scapular. Less people now believe to its some sort of magical power [of course except for our brothers and sisters who are still on the track]. I’m not saying that we should use the way it was but I am saying this because this might lead us towards looking and tracing our beliefs on lucky charms through this agimat. It isn’t impossible but who knows that through this epic, the tradition of wearing agimat could be traced. Besides we are not only the country having this kind of belief on “anting-anting” or “agimat” but we might be able to study it further and see where it originated really. In relation to our modern time, there are still a few people who wear “anting-anting” or “agimat” and they still do believe on the purpose that it serves like it would keep the wearer away of danger and will probably bring him/her to good luck. We cannot deny the fact that it is effective just like what was written on the epic. “Man has always been fascinated by the supernatural and has longed to harness its powers. It has been believed that thru certain rituals, a supernatural attribute can be stored in an object and used in times of need. Here in the Philippines,

we

call

these

objects

anting-anting

or

agimat

(http://www.thepinoywarrior.com/2012/01/all-about-agimat.html#sthash.X9xu3xR2.dpuf).” According to WikiPilipinas, “many fighters believe that anting-anting or agimat can keep them safe in battle.” Just like the mother of Sandayo who gave him the anting-anting before going to battle because it is protect him against enemies and also to attract women. “Some also believe that these anting-antings can make someone invulnerable and possess unnatural strength and speed, especially on a battlefield. Many are convinced these still exists up to these modern times (http://www.thepinoywarrior.com/2012/01/all-about-agimat.html#sthash.X9xu3xR2.dpuf).” That is the power that this “anting-anting” or “agimat” possess. Even now that little or less people are

getting fascinated to the real “anting-anting” or “agimat”, we should not put emphasis on how it should be used as decoration, or something used for fashion. It might be a matter to trace back history.
