BELE FOLK DANCE 1. A dance inherited from the French in the late 18th century, the name was usually called Bel Air but today it is shortened to Bele. The dance came about from the African slaves who mimicked the dance of the plantation owners and added the use of drums to the dance (Mahabir, n.d.). 2. The dance is used to represent the history of our ancestors in a way of expressing our freedom (Mahabir, n.d.). 3. The dance is done during cultural gatherings and fetes (Mahabir, n.d.). 4. The dance is performed with the use of different drums, a chorus of singers and single or group of dancers who may be male or female (Mahabir, n.d.). 5. The costume is consisting of a flowered or bright plaid material which is made into a long dress with fully gathered skirt, attached a bodice with long sleeve “This is tucked up over a long, white stiffly starched cotton petticoat, richly embellished with lace and edgings” (Mahabir, n.d.). A Foulard or neck scarf of contrasting color is used, and in typical West African style a brilliant plaid or flowered head tie called a Madras is tied attractively in a high fashion with ends either standing out in peaks or tucked in. The dress is often called a douietter (Mahabir, n.d.). 6. The mood can sometimes be happy, sad, or even romantic and in this was the drums and the chorus of singers suits the emotions and rhythm of the dancers (Honychurch, n.d.). 7. The music played is mostly of a cultural local based song which may include dialect both local and from the French language (Honychurch, n.d.). 8. Drums, Shak-Shaks, and the flute are some of the instruments used during this dance (Mahabir, n.d.).
