When a cell divides by mitosis: the resulting two daughter cells have the same number and type of genes as the original cell – genetic information is conserved, and this ensures that the daughter cell have all the genetic information they need to survive. When two sexually reproducing organisms breed, the resulting offspring must have the same number of genes as the parent organism. This ensures that the offspring has all the genetic information required to grow and survive.

Genetic continuity ensures the continuation of species because it ensures that the new cells or organisms have al the genetic information they need, in working order, to survive. A lack of genetic continuity results in disease and sometimes death and extinction.
