The Crucible Act II Questions 1) Right at the beginning of this scene, what is the source of tension in the Proctor household? In the Proctor household, it is noticed that the married couple is not very passionate and connected in the conversations they are having. They talk to each other as if they are strangers and hold a large sense of tension, making the scene uncomfortable. 2) What does Elizabeth fear most about Abigail? Elizabeth fears that Abigail is going to try to get her killed and fears that she believes that she can take her place as John’s wife. 3) Where has Mary Warren been, what does she report, and what does she give Elizabeth? Mary Warren has been at court all day. She reports that there are now 39 people accused of witchcraft and tells Elizabeth that her name has been mentioned in court. She gives Elizabeth a doll that she had crafted in the court.

4) What is the ONLY way any person accused of witchcraft can save his/her life? They must confess to save their life. 5) How did Mary Warren “save” Elizabeth’s life, but later cause her to be accused? Mary Warren tells Elizabeth that she stuck up for her in court and told them that she is innocent. She then later causes her to be accused because of the doll that she had given her although Mary did not know that Abby had a plan and she had been apart of it.

6) According to Proctor, what concerns Parris more than his duty to God? Give evidence from the play for support. Proctor believes that Parris is very materialistic and cares much about wealth rather than God. Proctor states, “…Parris came, and for twenty week he preach nothin’ but golden candlesticks until he had them” (Miller 62). 7) WHY does Hale come to see the Proctors? Hale comes to see the Proctor because he just wants to get a feel for himself of the people that have been accused and mentioned in court. He only wants to have an opinion for himself and see if the Proctors are good people or not. 8) What are a couple of reasons why Proctor may be perceived as a “bad” Christian (according to Hale)? According to Hale, Proctor is a “bad” Christian because he doesn’t attend Church on a constant basis, his third child is not baptized, and he cannot remember all his 10 commandments.

9) What commandment does John Proctor forget (not the #)?

John Proctor forgets “Thou shall not commit adultery”. It is ironic because John cheated on his wife 7 months before. 10) Why do Giles Corey and Frances Nurse come to see Proctor? They come to tell Proctor that their wives, Martha, and Rebecca, have been accused and now arrested. 11) What happens to Elizabeth at the end of this act, and what does Proctor demand of Mary Warren? Elizabeth gets taken and arrested. Proctor demands that Mary Warren goes to the court with him and tells the truth about everything that is going on. Mary Warren is worried about telling on Abigail....
