Description

The Crucible Act 2 Summary Setting: Johns proctors home •

The signific of this play is that each act takes place within e a single room, this symbolises the feeling of confinement that the people of Salem feel due to the feeling of the hysterical of witchcraft.

The motif of the window is used to show their yearning escape their inability to do so.

This is a paradox due to john committing adultery and then telling they eh is a good Christian since he confessed.

Elisabeth is an anomaly as she was the only one in the play who was cheated on.

Proctor's house is the setting - Elizabeth and John are chatting, there is tension, John is trying to placate Elizabeth but she doesn't fully believe in him. Elizabeth finds out that he was alone with Abigail and gets upset - he says he wasn't hiding anything, 'Good Christian', not a liar (FORESHADOWING).

Mary Warren comes home from court - John is angry that she left but she says that a whole group of people have been accused of witchcraft and she is part of the proceedings as she is a 'witness' as part of Abigail's group (shared).

Marry warren gives a poppet to goody proctor that she sewed in the court.

Giles Corey and Francis Nurse come and say that their wives have been accused. Walcott accused Martha Corey as he was sold a by her pig that died soon after and had individual motivation for revenge. This shows that because of the collective feal of hysteria individuals were able to sue this for their own personal motivation and gain.

Reverend Hale comes in and says the he's asking questions because Elizabeth has been accused - he has been questioning 16 people to see their motivations.

He asks about the Sabbath and Proctor says he doesn't go because Parris is obsessed with money (golden candlesticks) and doesn't have the 'light of God' in him. Then he is asked to say the Commandments and he forgets "Adultery, John'.

Cheever and Herrick come as representatives of the court to arrest Elizabeth as Abigail has accused her of murder. Abigail was at dinner and acts as if she has been stabbed by "Elizabeth's familiar spirit' and they find a needle stuck in her. Cheever examines the poppet and sees a needle in it - they bring Mary in who says she stuck it in against Abigail.

Elizabeth is arrested and taken away - Proctor says Mary must testify in court that Abigail is lying about the whole thing. She says that Abigail will kill me and say that he committed lechery. He is shocked but doesn’t care - my wife will not die for vengeance....
