The Eccedentesiast A Memoir

He sat with his forehead against the window, watching the rain fall down. Streams of water rolled down the window, and if you were watching the man from the outside, you would not have seen tears that rolled down his cheeks. He hardly moved, staying completely still as the rain soaked the grass. Someone approached him and tapped his back saying, “Everything will be fine.” When he turned to take a look, he saw no one but a memory of someone whom he knew so well. It haunted him everyday, a ghost from the past that keeps on coming back. He wiped his tears dry, leaving no sign of misery. He put his usual face on, a mask which he uses everyday to hide the pain and melancholy. He learned how to hide his feelings towards others. His mask is laugh. His mask is smile. His mask is happiness. When others saw him, they thought that he got everything. Utopic, the might say. He smiles when someone approaches him. He laughs when someone cracks a joke. Everything so little, he laughs and smiles at it. Some says that his happiness is too shallow. Some asks him why does he always smiles and laughs, he will just smile and say, “I’m just happy.” Little did they know, all he ever wanted was to give happiness and warmth because he does not want them to feel what he feels. They will never know his reason why. When he got home, the darkness engulfed him. And suddenly, he cried. Removing the mask from his face, and showing how truly sad he is. Melancholy devoured him, consoling him, caressing his back, and whispering thoughts of death. He wanted to break free, but he can’t and he couldn’t. Sleep, that is all that he needed. But even in his dreams, it kept on haunting him. It turned into a nightmare. He stared blankly into an empty space, seeing nothing but darkness. When he was a boy, he used to smile so often that you will not see a glint of sadness in his face. Playing outside with others is that all that matters to him. It felt like the whole world is revolving around him. However, things happened that he did not imagine and foresee; it changed him. He still laughs and smiles, but the shine in his eyes will never be back. His mask of happiness is what he wants and needs to obscure his sad face. He will always take refuge under his mask. Behind his happy character is a sadness which will they never knew. A sadness which will always be concealed deep inside of him....
