Description

Is the fashion industry harmful to society and the environment? The fast fashion industry is the second-larger polluter in the world behind the oil industry since it produces 10% of all humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams. What is more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. And washing some types of clothes sends thousands of bits of plastic into the ocean. Some people say it benefits them since fast fashion is cheap and allows for more affordable clothing. But, as their prices fall, so does their quality. Not to mention their impact on the environment. Morgan McFall-Johnsen a Reporter and a Business Insider said, " I do think fashion does not harm the society nor the environment much, It's cheap and I can be fashionable with a few dollars" Apparently, many people have the same opinion as her but there are who disagree with her because of many factors. First things first is Water usage. Wastewater from clothes factories get dumped directly into rivers, In Bangladesh alone, 22,000 tons of toxic waste goes straight into waterways a year. Also, there are excessive amounts of brands and clothing. Part of the problem is there are too many brands making a completely ridiculous amount of clothes. Moreover, the fashion industry is designed to make you feel out of trend after one week, With new trends coming out every week, the goal of fast fashion is for consumers to buy as many garments as possible, as quickly as possible.

One of the biggest problems is, not showing information about their supply chain. Fast fashion brands are not being transparent with their practices and they tend to hide certain information from their customers. Another thing why the fashion industry is harmful, not paying enough and fair salaries. Like most clothes, factories are in developing countries, the living wage there is not the same as the rest of the world ones. That is why they can sell clothes at low prices. Additionally, some fast fashion brands pay less than the local living wage, too, which is extremely disingenuous and unfair.

There are many disadvantages to the fashion industry like the harm to the environment, not to mention the society and human rights especially women and children. There are also a few advantages. For example, clothes are affordable for most people. I believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Also, the truth is that when we start to look closely at different industries and products, we can find hidden and ugly sides. So, For the fashion industry, it is very ugly from the inside so we should be more aware....
