(pgs 100-103) Eddie hates his dad for not being in his life and being neglectful. They do not have a strong bond. 3. Reread the paragraph on page 104 starting with, “All parents damage their children” Think about the analogy comparing youth to glass and parents to handlers. Do you agree or disagree with this assumption? Why or why not? Agree many kids in their youth have to work for what they have since their parents are not around. 4. Examine information about Eddie’s childhood and his relationship with his father. What type and degree of damage does his father inflict on him? (pg. 104-108) Eddie’s childhood was bad, his dad would whip his rear with a belt after he lost in cards, not even Eddie’s fault. The damage and depression that Eddie has been introduced to from his father is imaginable. 5. Eddie is involved in circumstances that lead him to a ‘final break’ with his father. The book marks it by saying, “This was the final handprint on Eddie’s glass.” What does this mean? (pg. 109) This means that Eddie’s father gave up and does not deal with Eddie anymore. Eddie caught his dad’s clenched fist for telling Eddie to get a job. 6. Explain Eddie’s meeting with his 3rd person in heaven. Also explain ‘her’ explanation of the presence of Eddie’s father. (pgs. 110-111, 114-116) The third person Eddie meets in heaven is Ruby, hinting “Ruby Pier” which given the name by her husband, Emile. He made Ruby Pier as a wedding promise to Ruby. Ruby was Eddie's third person since if there was no Ruby Pier, Eddie would not have had the same childhood growing up. Ruby says that Eddie's father in was hard on him, but also asked Eddie to understand that maybe he was hard on his father. Eddie felt anger brewing inside. Eddie’s father tried to hit him, in fact Eddie’s dad’s last words to him were “GET A JOB.” Eddie tells Ruby that she did not even know his father. But she did since there would be no pier for Eddie and his dad with out Ruby....
